Using aftermarket coolers for non-oc cpu

louis21ong

Does it make sense to have an aftermarket cooler on my i3-4170? Ambient temps in my room is about 38 degrees and my cpu at load gets to about 68-70deg. I'm planning to get a 2nd hand Hyper 212 Evo for around ~$20 from my friend who switched to water cooling. Oh and one more thing, I'm planning to get a 4670k when I get money for it. Any comments would be appreciated. Thank you!

I don't think your CPU should be that warm..... i3's do not run hot. Sure the heatsink is seated properly? The thermal paste isn't messed up?

But that being said, if you do plan on getting a 4670k (assuming you have a Z87 or 97 board so you can actually overclock it...) the hyper 212 idea aint bad. You will need better cooling to OC the i5 once you get it. And 20 bucks for a 212 is a great deal!

If you want to reduce air temps for a locked CPU, a cheap cooler such as the hyper 212 Evo will do the trick, dont need to invest hundreds of dollars for a water cooler.

The hyper 212 Evo will also come in handy for your 4670k, though I would recommend getting the 4690k instead as it had a better heat spreader over the 4670k, and that will help to reduce temperatures.

I don't live in the US by the way. I live in the Philippines where heat is really a problem. And yes, I will get a good z97 board along with the 4690k.

Yeah I was talking about the 4690k. I realized they didn't sell 4670k's here in the Ph anymore. Thank you!

Look at ambient first and them CPU temps. The temps are normal with that high ambient.

@louis21ong, 212 Evo for $20 is really nice pick and while it doesn't help that much with your temps, it will be much quieter than stock cooler. And will be much better choice for 4670K.

Sounds good to me, you won't see a benefit in the i3 but it's the same mounting as the i5, in which you will see a tremendous benefit, specially if you plan on doing some overclocking, so, i would buy it, specially if you are buying it from a friend since it takes the risk off of buying 2nd hand and for heatsinks it doesn't really matter.
