Is the FX-6300 still worth it?

Guest Hourani23

For an upcoming build of mine I am considering the FX-6300, I can get it for $130 USD with the ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0 from Microcenter. The question is, do I buy it? What are my other options? Thank you!

Nope, it isn't. i3 4160 would be a better alternative.

Only with this, OP is getting the 6300 & an ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0 for $130... Not just the CPU.

So, yeah, i would say it is worth it.

No your Pentium could out do the fx6 in some cases. An i3 is a much better option.

Is it the whole bundle for $130 or just the CPU? if it is $130 for the bundle, this is a great deal.

Its probably for an alternate PC.

OP, If this is for your current build, then do the above; although you probably won't find a new i5 for £130, you could certainly get an i3?

Well, if you really can't afford the extra $70, then go with the FX. The i3 has better performance, so that's something to consider.

alright depends what the OP is doing. If he plans on a gaming rig an i3 would still be better. If he plans on using it for a secondary rendering rig or light workstation rig it'll be fine. Some may argue with the i3 but even sandy bridge i5-2500k perform better in gaming.

It is a gaming rig.

Then no. FX chips are not good for gaming what so ever. Maybe if it was for a starter rendering build or so but even a i3 will outperform it in gaming. It may have 6 cores but 98% of the games out don't utilize those cores and even the ones that do the i3 still performs better.

You didn't mention budget once in that.

Again, that's true, but it depends on OP's budget which we don't know.

Yes it is worth it....Yesterday I was going to get one at microcenter with the cheapo board. By the time I was parked I convinced my self to get the ASROCK board.

Once in the store ...well....its only 20 more bucks for the 8320.

I was planning on getting an open box r7 370 for 130 but walked out with a 179 dollar R9 390 strix....whoops

Then they didnt have a 6 pin adaptor and since I am already in the doghouse what the heck....40 bucks for a 500 watt PSU.

Ya know your gonna walk out of there with an 8320:)

Then i'd go for the fx-6300 with the motherboard bundle, maybe stick a 212 evo on it and overclock it a bit.

Can't argue with that build as the 6300 would bottleneck all cards above the 960 anyways (talking price-wise). Even if you could allocate more budget towards your GPU by going FX, you would see no benefit.

All I'm going to say I don't go with an i3, go with the 6300 and save up for a big upgrade down the road with Skylake or Zen. People say the 6300 runs like shit with games but I have a hard time believing that since I actually have one....
