GTX 980 ITX build for college

arundel
Go to solution Solved by arundel,

So I've decided that I'm going to go with the node 202, and a gtx 970. Thanks guys!

i7-4790k - $339

Noctua NH-L9i - $50

16gb kingston fury ram - $95

500gb 850 evo ssd - $180

Gigabyte z97 mobo - $105

Fractal Design Node 202 + Integra PSU - $139

gtx 970 - $300

which all comes out to about $1200 which is nice. Thanks again everybody!

Hi I want to start a new itx build for college, and have decided on a few parts already, although I'm still deciding on the case and GPU

The components I will be getting are

i7-4790k

16gb kingston fury ram

500gb 850 evo ssd

gigabyte z97 motherboard

What I'm trying to decide is whether to get the hadron air (dat window ;) or to get a slim case such as the fractal design node 202 or Raven rvz02.

Also, I want to know whether to get a reference 980 for $400 now or a 780 for $200 and then sell it for Pascal when it comes out.

Also, should I do a red or green build? (if i get a reference card ill do a green build)

Get the 780 if you're gaming at 1080p or below. Also, a slim case like the node 202 or rvx02 is will be better due to the cramped nature of the hadron air. Also, the hadron has poorly color matched cables and a small-ish power supply.

Aesthetics of rigs matter

Thanks for the advice, yeah I was going to sleeve the cables on the hadron, although it would be a pain since it isn't modular and is riveted to the case.

I'm not going to be using this for too much, so I actually might drop the budget a bit and go with a 4690k. Also the budget for the case should be around $100 and for the gpu I want to spend either 400 for a 980 or 200 for a 780 and then buy whatever pascal card makes sense.

I saw you list a fractal design node 202 above. there's only a node 304 on pcpartpicker http://pcpartpicker.com/part/fractal-design-case-fdcanode304bl i think linus did a video recently with it and was able to fit in a single rad

The node 202 hasn't released yet, its a slim case and i don't think it can fit a rad if you put a full size gpu in. I don't think linus reviewed it, but Hardware Cannucks has.

Damn that thing is sexy.

It's about the size of a Xbox One right?

If Nvidia ever released a dual 980Ti chip card, that thing could have 10x much power as a console at the same size.

It is almost the size of the xbox one, just a little longer.

Node 202: 377x82x330 (mm)

Xbox one: 343x80x263 (mm)

so the node is about 60 mm (2.4 in) longer than the xbox, and 30mm (1.2 in) wider (or taller depending on orientation) which comes out to 10.2 liters vs 7.2 liters.

Seems awesome!

I would like to throw out there that the Asus Strix 970 only requires 1 8pin power connector, while all other 970s require an 8pin + 6pin power connectors.

So on the Asus Strix version you only have to hook up 1 connector instead of 2. :)

One of the main reasons I got the Strix myself.

---------------------

It overclocked just fine, and doesn't have coil whine.

For all of you haters.

Still hating because it's a 970, OP wanted a 980Ti which is a beast of a card if you have the budget for it.

980 ti is overkill if you are not playing at...

1080p 144fps

1440p 60fps

4k 45fps

Everyone knows the sweet spot for 1080p 60fps is the 970, and now also the 390.

And if you ever want to upgrade. SLI 970 is better than the 980 ti. (game permitting.) Maybe I'll just say "close to the same as the 980 ti."

I'm playing at IPS 1440P 144hz G-SYNC.... for the price people pay for IPS 1440P 60hz  ;)

I always say that the monitor is the biggest bottleneck in a system, even that 970 can get pretty decent framerates at 1440P (+60 in most games with tweaking the settings)
