Power Supply: Watts?

Go to solution Solved by 79 Potatoes,

A good quality 350 W PSU will handle that system perfectly. But if you want to get an additional 960 (why? though, or a way more power hungry one) get a PSU around 500-550 W (well, you can get more :P)

Hi Everyone.

Currently planning a new build and I am unsure how much watts will be needed.

Will be getting either a Corsair or Cooler Master PSU, and plan on expanding the

build in the future with more RAM and an additional GPU.

Current Build:

Chassis:          Cooler Master 690 III.

Motherboard:  Gigabyte Z97MX-Gaming 5 Micro-ATX.

RAM:              1 x Corsair Vengeance Low Profile (1 x 8GB) DDR3.

CPU:               Intel Haswell I5-4690K.

GPU:              1 x Gigabyte Nvidia GTX 960 WindForce2 OC 2GD.

HDD:              1

Optical Drive: 1

PSU:              ?

Possible Future Expansion:

RAM:             3 x Corsair Vengeance Low Profile (1 x 8GB) DDR3.

GPU:             1 x Gigabyte Nvidia GTX 960 WindForce2 OC 2GD.

CPU Liquid Cooling.

Thank You.

Plain wrong, using my CX500M for almost 2y with a 4770k and a 7970 both oc'ed

Just because you own a PSU doesn't make it good... You should replace that thing pronto...

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Not wrong at all. Just because yours works doesn't make it good.

Read this: http://www.overclock.net/t/1431436/why-you-should-not-buy-a-corsair-cx

It's okay for basic builds, but for performance and more power hungry builds, it's not good.

Well I never had a problem with it so... dont care

You will if you run it for too long. You don't have to own a PSU to deduce whether it's a good one or not. The CX series is a bad choice for anything with a hot GPU.

@Oshino Shinobu

Don't have a set budget, +/- $100 to $150.

Planning to go with the RM Series if I choose Corsair.

RMi is MUCH better than the RM for the money. The EVGA GS/B2/G2 is much better all around.

Just because your one is working doesn't make it any better, there are many people who have damaged their system using those PSUs and they are very cheaply made with poor temperature tolerance and we generally wouldn't recommend it unless you're on budget and it's a basic build with no overclock. Honestly I would replace it while it's working

I would go with a EVGA G2/GS, anything from modular or semi modular from Seasonic or a XFX XXX/XTR

You're free to do what you want with your own system and money just know that PSU is bad quality and it's not abnormal for it to possibly cause harm to your system.

EVGA products are unfortunately not readily available in my locale. Only EVGA GPU's.

Live in South Africa. :(

What about Seasonic,XFX,Coolermaster,Antec,Superflower?

@OAcesync

Personally don't know half of those brands, most of them are probably not readily available and would have to be imported.

Considering only brands that offer the most options in my locale such as Corsair, CoolerMaster, Thermaltake.

SuperFlower PSU's are being imported and they also look nice.
