Instant torque in itself won't be possible with a petrol engine, however we'll be seeing the death of the turbo lag fairly soon thanks to electric turbos, which Audi is pushing pretty hard into their new models. We can see models with electric turbos as soon as next year, which is as instant as it will get with combustion engines.

It makes sense in race cars, but in a general road car? Just seems completely stupid to me. 

Not to mention that an electric Turbocharger is the more efficient manner of going about it while having the same or even better functionality.
