What does Malwarebytes specifically protects you from?

I've heard people say malware but I think there is more to it...Does it protect you from most viruses, adware, trojans, worms?

Viruses, adware, trojans and worms are all malware, so yes, it protects you from them.

Malwarebytes will help detect viruses, but not as well as an anti-virus... It's mainly designed to detect malware, which other anti-virus software is weaker at; thus why people often recommend having an anti-virus as well Malwarebytes.

I work in a tech support office for a large University in the frozen wastelands of Canada. (it was 35 degrees c this weekend...)

Anyway, we use MalwareBytes not for its realtime protection, but as a scanner for disinfecting badly viruses systems. It finds everything from Trojans and backdoors, to unwanted software/adware to tracking cookies. It is an amazing tool. 

That being said, I cannot vouch for the efficacy of the real-time scan feature as I have never even seen that in action.

It protects you from a massive database of threats, along with the potential to stop zero-day threats.

Being a free product (in its free form, that is), they harvest data from you for discovering new malware signatures. 

There's nothing wrong with that, and actually it's pretty awesome.
