GPU for 1080p 60 Hz monitor

nims0c

I'm planning to buy a 1920x1080 60 Hz IPS monitor. What GPU should I get that will deliver around 60 fps with relatively high settings (maxed out where possible, somewhat high on more demanding games)?

(I was contemplating a GTX 970 but some say it's overkill and that you need 1440p or 144 Hz to take full advantage of it.)

GTX 970 100% isn't overkill, it's perfect for 1080p 60Hz @ 60fps, it will not do well at 1440p 144Hz.

I'd go for the GTX 970, or the r9 390, which ever you like the look of better/is cheaper, because both will perform pretty much the same.

(Or if you play games that are more optimized for nvidia cards then go for the gtx 970, same the other way round.)

970 will not get 60fps all the time at 1080p, if you like playing Ultra everything.

But I recommended both the 970 and 390, said they perform the same so get whichever is cheaper (Which is the r9 390 in most countries), then I said or you can pick based on which games you play if they are optimized better for one side, which just happens to be nvidia with the last couple big releases (Thx to gameworks ectect) so I used tht as an example instead of AMD

970 would be a slight overkill, but you'll atleast be sure you'll get 60 fpd most of the time!

maybe get a 280X or a non-x 290?

If you want to max out everything under the sun and never drop below 50fps ever look at a 390 or 970.

If you can live with turning a few things down a tiny bit in a few games that are not amazingly optimized a 290 is like 240$ and is pretty damn good.

I've never overclocked before but it seems pretty easy based on some video guides. Would your responses change if I said I wanted to overclock the GPU?

No, it will still not get 60FPS ultra everything, I know this because I have one!

Well the 970 is known for being a beast overclocker (levels out with the 980 at stock when you overclock it decently) but still it's perfect for 1080p when overclocked as well, just means the newer more demanding games will be playable at ultra (Maybe with AA settings not maxed out though on some games) @60fps

not really, you'll void your warranty (maybe) but it's pretty save to OC your card.

if i where you i'd get the 970. slight overkill is not a bad thing, and actually enhances your gaming experience since your card will be more silent!

Can they tell you overclocked a CPU or GPU? I thought you could just revert it to factory speeds.

Anyway, it just seems like everyone is all about overclocking so I figured it can't be that harmful to try myself.

please, do try to overclock! i overclocked my GPU and the gain in performance is definitely noticable.

you can tell if a GPU has been overclocked tough. i believe there are ways to re-flash the card with the stock clocked/untampered software, tough it isn't a 100% fix.

I'm planning to get a 980 Ti or equivalent in the future, so I don't see the point of overspending now.

Well if you can it would be better to just get that and forget about the 970 for now, but if you can't you could always get a 970, then SLI it later on, that will give you the same performance as a 980Ti. (Or if you find 970 to be more than enough you can just get a completely new GPU 3-5 years down the line)

it's incredibly wiser to save your money, wait and get the best you can , having only 1 purchase if you have the patience and discipline to do so man

honestly, it's in your best interest, you'll lost out on this card, have sub par perf and lose out reselling it to upgrade again.

The thing is I want a 144 Hz IPS variable-refresh rate monitor down the road. These displays are so expensive right now and require an equally expensive graphics solution. That's why I was thinking of a 1080p 60 Hz and an appropriate GPU for now.

There isn't one that makes sense this generation yet. 970 and 390 are both overkill, 380 and 960 are just a little too underpowered to reliably max out most games.

If you can get a 770 or a 280X get that.
