Do overclocks truly make a difference? Do you see a difference from stock vs your OC, (and not just the placebo effect of doing it)

I've gone back and forth from the stock 3.8 and my 4.5 OC and I truly don't notice a difference, except in synthetic benches.

Anyone else experience the same? I've seen multiple people say it doesn't make a difference at all in "real world" type things, but some people act as if it's some huge night and day thing.

OH YEAH THEY DO!

CPU intensive programs utilize these. Not much exist but it does make a difference.

For most programs, well no. It's kind of a bragging thing. If you want reliable headroom of performance, OC for no stutters or problems in programs.

I can feel it. I can't guarantee whether or not it's the placebo effect though.

If you do things that take advantage of the overclock, it'll make a difference. Such as running multiple video cards, video editing, file conversion, etc.

I think it depends what you use ur comp for . . . When I'm rendering vids my CPU is up full, and my RAM is half full . . . I can't overclock my CPU but I think if I had an Overclockable one and I monitored what my performance then I would see some differences, but for general day to day use I wouldn't expect facebook to load any quicker or anything

Also if you do any folding or run BOINC projects, you'll see some benefits there.

It depends on multiple things.

-what do you use the pc for?

-is the processor you have adequate for what you do?

-is the processor the limiting factor in what you're trying to improve?

for example,for me.

I sometimes render large complex videos,or render out high poly 3D models.

Overclocking my i5 2500K would make a significant difference for me.

But if you have a 3930K and are simply gaming, maybe streaming then everything should already run more or less perfectly, because games use 4 cores, you have an additional 2 cores and 6 threads remaining for everything else.

so I can't imagine that unless you do something more cpu intensive you'd notice a difference.

EDIT:

@Lays

I did a very short 1 minute run through on metro 2033 with everything enabled (including DOF).it was done at the very start of the mission "hunter",walked through with Alexei to the door, stared at the people crowding by it,and that's it.

w2mOVbx.png

as you can see most of the time there is very little difference, but where it dips down on the stock clock benchmark run,the OC dipped down less.this results in more smooth and seamless gameplay.

this is the GPU,couldn't really test the cpu since my system is more held back by the GPU.

I get a solid 10 fps more in skyrim at all times. So yes.

You just have to be going higher than 50mhz to see that difference. I am at a +200mhz core and +400 memory clock.
