Hi Friends,

Yesterday there was a problem with my computer. My Computer was running perfectly suddenly the display went off. I restarted. It went till the windows logo, then again the display went off. Again I restarted. It said windows diagnosis the error and asked me to restore. I clicked restore but it freezed with windows logo. I reinstalled Windows 8. It went till the entire installation process at the time of restarting it again gone black without display. Again I made hard reset. It went inside Windows another 15 min again the screen went off.

I cleaned my ram. I checked all the connections inside my CPU. But nothing seems to be working. I called the service engineer. He said the problem could be with ram or hard disk. We checked the ram with another computer. The ram seems to be working fine. The he said it could be problem with the hard disk. We put the hard disk to another computer and I could read the data in the drives. He said you can read the data, But you just cant boot the OS.

I hate to get convinced that my hard disk is not working. I am running i7 920, 8gb ram, nvidia geforce 210. Windows 8.

When I reinstalled my Windows 8, It said Windows 8 needs to be activated. Then only I came to know it is just activated for 6 months.

Now pls help me on this. What could be the problem. Is my harddisk really gone bad or anything else could be the problem. My front USBs often go for task. I need to do hard reset to make it work often. If it is really my hard disk problem. Should I buy a new one. I am using 500 gb hard disk which is more than enough for me. I don't want to spend more money on my Computer as I am thinking of buying a new one in near future with latest haswell processor and better graphic card with better motherboard and ram. I want to run this computer atleast for another 6 months.

If I want to install Windows 8, how to activate permanently. Why it is activated only for 6 months.

Pls help me guys.

Regards.

@ssmuthu. It may work. Try getting into the BIOS and letting it run there for a bit. See if the display turns off again. Also, does your board have an iGPU?

Will it be alright if I do complete format of my harddisk?

if the controller is damaged, your hdd is pretty much dead. You can try downloading a live linux diagnosing cd to make sure your computer boots correctly and then look whats up with your hdd

Download parted magic

http://partedmagic.com/doku.php

its just a very basic linux you can boot to from a cd. then try to access your hdd and look whether windows data is missing or corrupted

Yeah, it sounds to me like the hard disk is dead. Boot off your windows 8 installation disk/stick and after putting in your language, click on "Repair my computer" and the bottom of the window. When open command prompt and type

diskpartlist diskselect disk <The number of the disk based on the capacity as listed in line 2>exitchkdsk /F /R

and if it comes up with any unrepairable errors (it will take a while), your drive's busted. It might repair some stuff though - if it does, try booting again and it might work. I would suggest it will come up with some unrepairable errors though based on the information you have given us so far.

So is that mean my hard disk only problem right now not other things like vga card or any other stuffs?

If it fails the diskcheck, it would appear to be, but it is possible that it was caused by something else like a power surge which broke a number of components, or something like that. The Hard disk on its own sounds like the most likely cause though.

You can still do what mortis said. Open up command prompt and run those checks.
