I'm going to be doing a crossfire setup with my next pc.

Specifically, 2x R9 390 video cards. There's only going to be one card at the start, and will be adding the second later.

I know I'm going to be looking at a PSU around 800w.

Should I instead go for a 900-950w PSU instead? Are there any particular brands that work better for this than others?

The system will be running an i7-5820K cpu and either an MSI X99 PLUS motherboard, or an ASUS X99-A motherboard.

you *should* be fine. Just run a stress test on it. It would be pushing it close though. For gaming it will probably be fine, but not for folding@home

An 850w will work just fine. If you want be on the safe and quiet side, get a 1000W, as it will give plenty of headroom. EVGA G2 PSUs are some of the best values, so you should check those out.

I would go for a 1000W PSU just for peace of mind plus anything in future you may want to do.
