I personally would go for a 390 due to the cheaper price, and higher performance, but it just depends on what games you are playing, and if you do any sort of Cuda work.

get the 390. Assuming that games will utilize more vram in the future, it's a very nice investment.

If you are going to overclock the 970 is better. If you're going to be relying on stock speeds, the 390 has a better factory overclock.

I think the 390 is a better value. 8GB of VRAM is nice to have so you know you'll never run out before your GPU gets outdated. I would recommend the 970 if you wanted to have a really small build or would have major problems removing heat from a case, but why not just go for raw performance since you have the space?

Actually not even then, according to JayzTwoCentz vid.

it depends on what games really. i mean as far as i can tell the 970 usually beats it in 1080p, but like if you really step back and think about it, you shouldnt base your decision on a 5 fps difference from some shady benchmark. buy the one that you think will last and suit you best. personally im going with the 390 because the 8gb will come in handy with how long ill be keeping it.

I too would recommend the 390, performance wise theyre similar but i have grown to disdain Nvidia because of their proprietary technologies (gameworks, g-sync, sli...) and stuff like that. But thats just me being very picky with who i give my money to. Just dont fall for the "970 consumes way less power" and "the drivers are better" crap.

Plus the 390 has a backplate :D

Depends, if you need any Nvidia-specific feature (CUDA, ShadowPlay, etc.), get the GTX 970, otherwise get the R9 390.

This should help:

Help or deceive? He uses a badly overclocked 970 in that video. It doesn't give a good general picture of overclocked 970s.

I wouldn't take his word for it when his was only 1442 mhz and most can reach between 1500-1600 if they have good cooling.

Just pointing out you shouldn't buy something expecting it to perform 20-25% better than it is sold, that's a risk you can take and it's cool if it does, but they don't sell it clocked at 1500 for a reason. Why wouldn't they if every one could do it?

I had 2 MSI 970 water cooled, they could not reach 1500.

So 1450 is probally more commen then 1500+.

And as said earlier, just because it can overclock, dont mean you should use that as a selling point for choosing one over the other, as not everyone overclocks.

Did you watch his vid? The max overclock his turd of a 970 could manage was 1440MHz. Mine boosts to 1300 without any overclock at all. You have to be very unlucky to get a 970 that will not OC to at least 1500 MHz.
