Just received my sound card. My first thoughts.

kuddlesworth9419

Well I didn't really know what to expect first of all from a sound card so instead of buying the best one I could I went for the Xonar D1 which had great reviews. I never thought that the sound would sound completely different and surprise me but so far the sound is much cleaner than it was before, it's hard to explain but it sounds quante (if that makes sense). I did however have a problem with the Xonar D1 PCI bracket which was a pain to get in so instead I didn't put the PCI bracket tab thing on the outside but inwards, I think it wasn't bent enough or something because it refused to fit in. Oh and also throw away the driver disc because it's really sh*t.

I'm thinking of getting a sound card as well (Xonar STX) since reviews like this makes it so tempting.

Thanx linus for the hammering on a sound card and that even a budget one from a decent brand would be better then onboard :P

It doesn't matter how good your sound system is, it will still be 'bottlenecked' by the onboard sound processor. IE it will still sound crap.

Okay interesting...I'm not a headphone user at the moment (I do want to get one in the future). Which sound cards do you recommend?

Will work for electronic components and parts

sadly asus is the only decent brand, creative has issues with their amp that causes static, it's good but that's why I can't recommend it, many people start getting static.

go with a half-assed asus and use the DAC and amp and you should be set

I'm just using Microlab 2.1 speakers. They had a good review and cost £50.

Yes it's worth it if you have the money which I didn't but yea I really wanted a sound card. I could have gotten the Xonar Essence but I also want an SSD which I am also saving up for. I guess if you listen to a lot of music then you should definitely get a sound card. If you play games then it is a definite must, sound is brilliant on games.

YES, I have seen many reviews, of course he needs something like HD 598 to do a proper review, but then again, he won't have a standpoint of a professional audio enthusiast kind of review that you get from CNET/Head-fi :/

All he'd have to do is spout some crap about "soundstage", "midrange detail", "timbre", "velvety bass", "Sibilance", and don't forget to talk about the aesthetics.  After all the main reason you buy this crap is how it LOOKS, after all.
