5850 was a high end card at it's time. 550 ti was an entry level card. Even though 550 is one generation ahead, unlike the 5850 it does not have support form Nvidia anymore thus no new drivers and performance will be overall worse.

Assuming the 5850 is in good condition (hasn't been used for mining, hasn't been overheat and etc) it should be a good choice. It's older brother, the 5870 can actually run Witcher 3 at 30 fps (can't remember settings) so it should be more than enough for most games. I'm not sure it will run the latest and greatest titles, but everything from 2014 and back should be able to run, one way or another.

Minimum is 5850. You are A-ok with it. the 550ti, however, will struggle to run it.

IIRC 5850 is more close to 560/560 Ti
