Upgrading to a DSLR

I'm looking to upgrade from my Sony HX50 to a DSLR, but I have a rather low budget currently and am stuck between the Canon 700D (T5i) and the Nikon D5200.

After watching and reading reviews for both bodies, they both seem to be excellent cameras, but I can't quite decide which would be best for me.

I mostly do wildlife/pet and landscape photography, but also occasionally do portraits too. The touchscreen of the 700D appeals to me greatly.

I've also had some experience with a 600D which I found to be rather enjoyable, whereas I have no experience with Nikon cameras.

On the D5200, more focus points (39 vs 9 on the 700D) also appeals to me, leaving me stuck between the two bodies.

I've not been able to decide which of these would be best for my needs and would appreciate some assistance.

The Nikon D5200 is essentially the same as the D3200 all the way up to the D7200. Yes there are some differences in control layout and sensors but there is nothing a D7200 can do that the D3200 can't do in actual use. If you need or prefer the swivel screen get the D5200. If not I would say get the D3200 with kit lens and use the saved $$ for things that really make a difference like external flash and faster lenses if you need it. Camera bodies are emphasized way too much. Lenses and accessories make more of an impact on actual photography.

Go to a store where you can touch both cameras or similar models. Go into menu, play with the controls etc. The one that you like more is the right choice. Later on as you gain more experience you will be able to decide for yourself which is better without going to forums for advice.

If you dont plan on doing any video, go with the d5200 for sure. If you plan on using it for video allot, i would go with the canon 700d. Also, the main thing when buying a new body is that you will want to look at the lens lineup and what will suit you better. You tend to get a bit more options when it comes to lenses on the canon side, but nikon does offer better sensors.

Flip a coin  :P There is good advice posted above.  Either camera should work well for you.  For my wife, I bought her the Nikon D5200, but that was mainly because I'm already invested with Nikon as I own a D300 and D610.  You may want to go to a store and see which one feels better in hand.  Good luck and let us know what you end up getting.

Since you do landscape photography, the dynamic range of the d5200 will be superior to canon's. Its raw files have the ability to open up the shadows much cleaner than the canon's. Although you could get the same results with proper technique, the d5200 would be cleaner with the shadows. And for pets, the focusing system with 3d tracking would be a useful addition.

After having some hands on time with a 700D, 750D and a D5300, I ended up going with the Canon 750D w/ 18-55mm kit lens.

Thanks for the advice :)

I say get a Nikon 3200, although it's not on your list but it has been mentioned. My reasons are its a great for beginner's, lots of mega pixels too so you can crop heavier. Only 9 focus point's tho, which suits me as when your up against time, I'm sure finding 9 points will be quicker than 30+. Go on get it, you won't be disappointed.
