So I recently asked you guys about a build I was planning for my girlfriend.

Her Parts List

CPU: i5 4460 (have)

MOBO: Asrock H97 Pro4 (have)

RAM: Kingston HyperX 2x4GB @ 1866MHz

PSU: Corsair CX600M

SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB

Case(s): Corsair 200R, Corsair Carbide, NZXT S340 or NZXT 210 Elite

I am planning on giving her my R9 270X and upgrading to a GTX 970 or better yet R9 390. But then I looked at the power the 390 uses and I don't think my 600W PSU will handle it...

My PSU is a Thermaltake TR2 600W. Should I give her that and upgrade my PSU too? Additionally I was thinking of spicing her build up more and perhaps get her an R9 380 instead and sale or wall mount my R9 270X(first ever GPU). Would her build be fine with 600W PSU if I go for the R9 380?

I really want her to play Star Wars BF3 with me(that's one of the games she got excited for) and I don't think my R9 270X will handle that game well at high/max settings.

Please no fan Wars.

For the case, go with the NZXT s340. I'm not sure about your GPU problem tho :/

I'd personally  get 2 better PSU's to be fair, I've heard pretty bad about the TR2 Series, and the CX series isn't really that quality,

GPU wise, For you a 970 would be pretty awesome :) and a 380 or 280X would be pretty awesome for her :D. but a 270X would be great as well, so i'd probably just give her the 270X

Corsair CX series are good budget PSUs and a review on the Thermaltake TR2 says it is an okay PSU

REFERENCE: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/thermaltake-tr2-700-w-power-supply-review/11/

Give her the 270X, its a good GPU also give here the Thermaltake since the 270X consumes more power. Then get yourself a 970. The 970 paired with the Corsair PSU is a good match.

On the case, I would suggest the S340. :) Good luck!

Under full load on the 390 this guy is getting 442 watts. Its a comparison of the 970 and 390. It should also help you see the difference in performance.

The only thing the 390 has going for it is the 8GB of VRAM which is useful at 1440p and higher.

It does perform better at the same price as 970 at all resolutions. The card is overkill for 1080 anyway.

At the cost of higher heat output, power inefficiency, etc.

What if he lives in a cold place? Saves on heating bills. The 390 also has the advantage of 8gb of memory which is important if he decided to crossfire. Even with dx12 coming games still have to programmed to be able to stack memory and thus I think it will be underutilized especially with cross platform games.

I've yet to have any issues with my Thermaltake TR2 and I build this PC over a year ago. Only noticeable thing is the coil wind sometimes during heavy use but then again I always have music or ac running so the coil wind is muffled.

Guys, honestly if I could go for the 390 I'd take it simply because of the 8GB VRAM. I don't pay the power bill where I live so that isn't much of a concern for me. I also currently have my PC hooked up to a 42" LCD LG tv at 1080p. If I get the 390 then I could simply sell my TV and get a 4K TV as they are pretty cheap now. My girlfriend on the other hand, only wants a small 30" monitor(actually she said a small 20" monitor but I convinced her of a minimum of 30") and she says it doesn't have to be 1080p LOL I don't think she knows what 2K or 4K even are!

My lady got so happy when she realized the UPS packages I received the other day had her PC parts. She thought I was joking when I said I'd build her a PC and now she tells me that I don't have to make hers special. But for her I am willing to go that extra mile.

Guys, this will be my second PC build in recent times (I build one years ago in highschool, but all I really did was upgrade RAM, storage, and add some drives from what I remember). This will be her first ever gaming PC though. Any other tips on how I can make hers a bit special? I've been thinking about painting her case with stencils and adding LEDs. Can someone point me in the right direction for painting cases?

Thank you all for your feedback. Really appreciate it as it gives me even more motivation.

390+600W should be fine! ;)

If I remember right the 290X uses more power than 390 and the 290X can run on 500W. :P
