iMac i7-2600k

Go to solution Solved by STRMfrmXMN,

So, i've been trying to sell my i7-2600k CPU for a while now, and someone messaged me the other night about whether or not it would work in an iMac. I got the guys specs posted below (or at least what he sent me in an email) and i was wondering if it'll work? Socket is correct (LGA155), however he's told me that people have said that the i7-2600k will not work because it's overclocked. I think it's possible this could be the case because i know Apple's BS components do not like other components when swapped, however, i didn't think that just an "overclocked" CPU would cause it to not work. I figured i'd help him out because if someone knows a legitimate answer, this could help me sell this CPU!

Any ideas?

He might need to place his iMac on top of an AC vent to keep it cool but it should theoretically work, though I think it's unlikely knowing Apple. Only time they've ever sold an unlocked CPU, AFAIK is in the new iMac with a 4770k. I would just tell him "no, it's not going to happen."

I don't see why it wouldn't. The Core i5-2400S utilises LGA 1155 just like the Core i7-2600K. The chipset should be fine now whether the BIOS will have options to overclock is another matter but I see no reason why it wouldn't work.

it would overheat as the cooler in the iMac is ment for a low power i5, not a 95w i7

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

The people telling you it won't work or that the iMac uses low power chips are incorrect.   It should work just fine, although they would be unable to overclock it of course.

Tell my tale to those who ask. Tell it truly; the ill deeds along with the good, and let me be judged accordingly.
