MSI Radeon R9 390 GAMING 8GB or Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 i will be playing batman arkham knight, Battlefield Hardline, witcher 3 wild hunt om max not in 4k though i dont have a 4k monitor

Just get an 8gb r9 290x.

i'm doubting the 970 because of the 3,5 v ram. Could it become a problem in 2 years?

Nvidia Titles = GTX 970 HANDS DOWN

 

AMD gets F'd in the A by Nvidia gameworks titles. /I have a 290 and a 290x in this house, I bought a GTX 970 because I DO play gameworks games,.. AMD was pathetic trying to use maximum details on Nvidia focused titles.

 

Get the BEST performer in ALL games, right now between those two cards,....its the GTX970.

 

/The 3.5GB isn't an issue, the details REQUIRED to get that high,.. would make the FPS unplayable before VRAM was an issue, as the CORE grunt just isn't there for 4K anyway.

 

/Only on unoptimized pieces of shit, would it be an issue, and if its that bad with Vram usage at 1080p/1440p on modern unoptimized games, it's probably performing bad on all cards.

 

 

 

Some people say that the 4Gb is better than the 3.6Gb of the other...

This can be true, but also take into account the elephant in the room. Both would tank FPS to unplayability @ 4K above low>medium even without Vram constraints.

 

Some people say that playing ANY Nvidia titles on AMD is like suffering eternity in Hell,.. it's quite unpleasant.

Consider what games you play before you consider a new GPU to play them on.

The massive frame buffer on the 390 (and 390x) is only really useful if you plan to run two or three in crossfire, in which case you would be able to turn the settings high enough in 4k and in very few 1440p games to go above 4GB Vram. As a single card solution for 1440p, 1080p and even 4k it doesn't matter, if you where to stress a 970 to expend all of it's available Vram you would already be well bellow 30FPS in most titles, even at 1440p.

R9 390, better bang for buck ( preforms better as a 970). And in  my exprerience amd cards perform better as Nvidea's not in the sense of avarage frame rates, but i had a asus strix 970 and now temporary a 7870, my 7870 has less micro stuttering and frame drops....

BF4 was better too (Vsync off 1080p Ultra) with better minimums and averages, and just feels/looks outright smoother in general when moving the mouse left and right quickly.

 

Not tried my other games yet... I figure Nvidia's Triple buffering is the key, when using Vsync it helps with the input lag and I prefer using TB whenever possible with Vsync.

But....unless the program calls for it,...AMD's isn't on EVER except for OpenGL titles set in CCC, but you cant for DX games :(

Nvidia Titles = GTX 970 HANDS DOWN

 

AMD gets F'd in the A by Nvidia gameworks titles. /I have a 290 and a 290x in this house, I bought a GTX 970 because I DO play gameworks games,.. AMD was pathetic trying to use maximum details on Nvidia focused titles.

 

Get the BEST performer in ALL games, right now between those two cards,....its the GTX970.

 

/The 3.5GB isn't an issue, the details REQUIRED to get that high,.. would make the FPS unplayable before VRAM was an issue, as the CORE grunt just isn't there for 4K anyway.

 

/Only on unoptimized pieces of shit, would it be an issue, and if its that bad with Vram usage at 1080p/1440p on modern unoptimized games, it's probably performing bad on all cards.

 

 

Some people say that the 4Gb is better than the 3.6Gb of the other... This can be true, but also take into account the elephant in the room...

Some people say that playing ANY Nvidia titles on AMD is like suffering eternity in Hell,.. it's quite unpleasant.

Consider what you play before you consider a new GPU.

I got a 295x2. Do you know what i had to do to play The Witcher 3. Because that is the ONLY game you are talkin about, other then Project Cars maybe, but who cares for racing games on PC.

 

I had to do the insane thing, of forcing, YES FORCING. Tesselation to only do x16 instead of x64 in CCC.

 

And after that, i had no darn issues what do ever playing the game maxed out, albeit AA does kill my FPS at 3440x1440.... But then again, who needs 8x AA at that resolution (yeh, its 8x by default it seems)

 

Either way, AMD works fine, 390 is better then 290X in some ways, 8GB 290X =/= 8GB 390. There is a few differences, and to make it the same card you need to flash the bios of the card too. Some users on this forum has point out that the memory used on 390/390X may simply be of higher quality since they run it faster. Thus trying to force the memory on 290/290X to run at higher speeds if the quality isnt sufficient may cause issues.

You can set tripple buffering in CCC for AMD. Perhaps Nvidia does it by default, but AMD have the function too. If you played BF4 with AMD, then i really hope you used Mantle as it DOES help AMD a lot. If you didnt, then welcome to the world of poor DX11 overhead VS good DX11 overhead.

Yes, even a 550w is enough. Single gpu systems don't use that much power, especially the 3xx series.

Drivers.... as if Nvidia is much better. Just look at their last few releases. They've been worse then anything AMD has released for a LONG time.
