Surround sound problem/question....

Hello,

I have a Yamaha receiver (it's old-ish but still very good) with DTS Surround and Dolby Digital (my speakers are high end stuff btw). I have a home cinema basicly. So when I play movies or do windows tests it will play DTS or Dolby Digital (that depends off course) but when I want to play video games it will not change to Dolby or DTS while the game supports it. I tried it also with my PS3 and it is flawless (I play uncharted there is DTS Surround for example or CoD = Dolby  all good) but on my PC it wont change to DTS or Dolby while gaming. As I said I can play movies and listen songs (that support it) with DTS or Dolby. So my question is how can I enable the surround sound on games?

Thank you

Make sure DTS is used by default format in your playback settings. I can show you some screenshots if you need help finding this. That might help fix the problem in some games.

Although your question is different, @spwath is correct. He speaks with experience! Some games just don't support surround sound through optical.

Just because I'm curious. What games were you trying to play?

For optical DTS or DDL, you need a soundcard to actively encode the signal for a game. Recorded media found in movies, music, and tests will work because they are pre-encoded by nature. Real-time video games simply cannot pre-encode their sounds due to the various algorithms and effects they go through depending on the player's head position.

i have never had any games on PC output DD or DTS. Wanted them to do it, but they never did. Never could set anything up in windows or the games either. If you can connect through HDMI then use that and set your speaker config to 5.1 (or 7.1 if thats what you have) and make sure the game is set to the same thing (might be just called surround in game). It will then output 5.1 (or 7.1) using PCM.
