It really depends on how your media player handles the channels (additionally why in the world would you use WMP). The sub channel is not an actual channel and is usually derived by filtering out the high frequencies of a merged stereo signal. This is often done in hardware and not software, which may be why WMP missed it.

It really depends on your receiver and how high you set your cross over frequency. My subwoofer stays pretty idle unless I activate the extra bass feature on my receiver, which I usually leave on because my sub mixes well with my speakers. Most music does not consistently extend below 60 Hz.

Why you hatin on Microsoft? You try making something better. Most music is record and mixed in two channels. You're correct about the sub receiving a filtered signal, but WMP does supports multi channel if your source is multi channel.

I'm not hating on Microsoft (at least not today) but there are way better media players out there. The "You can't make anything better" is the most stupid argument in the world. I can't make a fridge, but that doesn't mean I can't determine that a fridge is crap when it's 20C inside of it.

I just think you're being a little harder on wmp than you need to be. Dont limit yourself. You can make anything you put your mind to. And I disagree. There aren't any good media players out there at all. Wmp is right smack dap in the middle.
