After I heard Fallout 4 and a few other games, I decided I would aim to build my own gaming/recreational PC for the first time with the help from a friend. I was going to see if I could get any opinions and any ideas on how to improve cost and/or performance. Here's the link: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/HannibalLecter/saved/sBXG3C

I know I can save on the case but I'm unsure what case I should use instead of the one I have selected it with.

/Edit: I'm already over budget so I have to save a bit longer than I was expecting but I'm trying to keep it below 1600.

If you want to lower budget:

Windows can go out the window

you could go for a cheaper gpu

You could go for an overall cheaper build, but the two things above would be my first changes if you want to save some $

Recommend what is best, not what you preffer.

"Like" comments to show your support of them or the idea they express.

I like windows because I'm intending on also keeping my writing and storyboards on it for the coming semester.

Do you have a recommendation for the GPU?

You could find a R9 290(x) or a R9 390.

The build above is quite good

Very much so! I appreciate the recommendations. I'll probably end up going with this build of yours. Would it be better to keep yours or could I change the video card to this: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-video-card-gtx970gaming4g

The GeForce 960 FTW SCC 4 gb has a higher core clock then the one you have and it 250 with rebate .

But I am new to the whole determining how good stuff is

There is so much more then core clock and vram, young grasshopper you have much to learn.

The first thing I will teach you is that buying a 4gb 960 is a decision worse then high diving into a used pota poty.

This is my first PC build so I'm learning myself. Trust me, I'm no pro. It's why my more capable friend is going to help me with assembling it.

The XFX 290X has a much better price to performance.

The 970 will have slightly better performance at 1080p.

They tie at 1440p.

And at 4K the 290X will have slightly better performance.

But in all resolutions they are usually within 5% of each other in framerates.

So all-in-all, changing from the one you have to my previous reference isn't much of a difference except in cost?
