So yeah, it's narrowed down to 2 cards now...

PhysX is nice but not a must for me.

In terms of performance, R9 390 beats the GTX 970

HOWEVER, being a powercolor owner myself, their coolers f*cking suck and are noisy as f*ck.

That's a bit pricy for a GTX 970 though, don't you have anything cheaper?

Owned Powercolor before.... never had a bad one, Sapphire on the other hand....

Both really on par IMO, on 1080p I would get 970 and higher I would take 390.

But is it worth it with a Phenom II? Or are you going to upgrade that too?

Using Anandtech's gpu bench 2014 as a reference, you'll see the 970 outperforming the 290 more times than not ( especially 1440p resolutions and below). But, since the 390 has slightly higher clocks, they should be pretty close to each other. However, the 970 outputs much less heat and combined with the G1's non-reference cooler you'll have a [near] silent card most of the time (that and the PhysX bonus you seem to like :) ). The only situation I'd go for the 390 would be playing on a monitor above 1440p (but it doesn't seem like it's the case).
