5820k worth it?

Go to solution Solved by TheCaptain53,

Pretty much yes

Then I wouldn't bother.

The only way someone should justify going LGA2011-3 is if they want 3 or 4-way SLI, or if your source of income depends on your PC. If it's just for fun, then LGA2011-3 is a waste of money.

Those extra cores also won't help with gaming today. We can't say for sure how DX12 is going to use those extra cores because it's not even out yet. It is all just speculation and promises at the moment.

4690K or 4790K will do you just fine.

Even if you are video editing, 4790K is more than enough.

Hey, right now I have an i3 2120 with a gtx 970 (I think there might be a problem there) and now I have been wanting to upgrade as I brought project cars and didn't realize the very high cpu requirements. So I was thinking of getting the 5820k as right now it is only £15 more than a 4690k. Is this a good price? Does it make it worth getting? With dx12 coming soon apparently it will be able to utilize all the cpu cores better. Or should I just not do anything and wait for skylake?

Thanks

EDIT: CRAP I MEANT THE 4790K SORRY

Where do you find it for £15 more than the 4690k? I'd be very interested to see who's selling it at that!

If its 15 euro more than the i5 then it sounds really good, but also factor in the price of a shiny new board and DDR4 as well. But if its still a competitive price after that, then do it.

£15 more for the CPU, plus £200 or so for the motherboard and another £130+ for the new RAM. All for no more performance in games than an i5 4690K.

Go for either the 4690K or 4790K. If you're only gaming, the i5, if you're going to be rendering, editing and such, go for the i7.

why not get a used i5 3570k or i7 3770k and then wait till skylake?

Skylake can die in a hole, will be a 980x user, and will always be a 980x user.

£15 more than the 4690K? As I understood it, the 5820K was this much more expensive than the 4790K.

Unless you're into REALLY heavy workloads, you probably won't see the benefits of the LGA2011-3 platform. You also have to consider the extra premium of an X99 motherboard and DDR4 RAM, both of which are super expensive right now.

If you must have hyperthreading, the 4790K will do the job just fine.

But don't forget you need to spend easly 100£ more on a mobo and 50£ more on DDR4 for the 5820k

and you get more heat.

But with those prices, either you are overpaying the i5 or underpaying the 5820k

How the hell is the 5820K only 15 pounds more over a 4690K?

Not sure where he is from, but in Denmark Intel have raised their prices to insane levels. So now an i5 4690k cost about the same as the i7 4970k did about 5 months ago.

Is a 5820k worth it? Not really unless you need the extra PCIe lanes that x99 affords you.

At a price to performance scale x99 isn't worth the money directly. It gets a little muddy though. the last enthusiast platform was x79, and while not as polished today is still viable over 5 years later. I don't expect x99 to last that long, but the fact there'll probably be at least one refresh in that time makes for a viable upgrade path. If you can I'd probably recommend most people wait for skylake. Although the specs I'm seeing aren't brilliant on paper, the low power, and low temps leave one hell of a lot of room for overclocking.

Yes, this is a very nice processor. the 5820K is not worth the buy outside of a workstation environment...because the X99 motherboards and DDR4 RAM are expensive and he already own DDR3... so Z97 and 4790K is your best option if you can afford it, sure.

Honestly, the 4690K and 4790K will last for many years to come, given that you're prepared to overclock. Hell, people are still using the 2500K and 2600K today!

Is it just for gaming?

While I do agree with this most of the time. Some games are finding their way onto the market that can actually utilise multicore performance.....GTAV for example. While I agree these are few and far between still, and there's no other high priced examples that have done so to this degree I can see it start happening with the prevalence of multicore gaming rigs. As more of their customer base upgrades developers have to adjust.
