Hey guys so i have recently moved rooms and i wanted to take my router with me tot he new room but i cant. Apparently time warner cable only activates the jack in a specific room, so i called them and asked them if they could activate the jack on my new room and they said sure for $69.99 and i was not paying that amount of money instead i decided to hop on ebay and buy a 50ft ethernet cable for $3 and routed the cable through my wall, it was all great until my dog chewed it this has happened 2 times so i have started to think i need a new solution. What do you guys recommend should i go for a cheap wireless card ? i do a lot of video uploading and play tons of games. thanks for anyone that can help me or give me some advice.

Powerline seems like a great option for your situation. Check out the comparison here ->

Intel i7 4790k / MSI Z97M / Hyper 212 Evo / MSI Twin Frozr GTX 770 / 16GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz / Fractal Design Arc Mini R2 / Corsair CS750M / Samsung 840 Evo 250gb SSD /  WD Blue 1TB

I'd say just get the 50ft cable, make sure it's cat5e

And make sure that your dog can't chew on it.

Teach your dog to behave. Spray vinegar on the cable or something

If its an AC wireless router and a AC wireless card it would be fine. My ac wireless gets 1.3gb/s soo better than ethernet. Wireless N should be fine, shouldn't be too much on an issue, signal might be low depending on how far away you are.

I'm sure for your uses it's fine but you don't get that speed. It's a misleading number. They get that 1.3Gbps by adding the UL and DL for the best theoretical speed that a wireless device can connect to and assume that it's the only device on the network. So even in theory:

Gigabit -> 1Gbps

AC 1300 -> ~600Mbps

But when you actually have multiple devices? Well... this is a good article going through that, but just copy/pasting the important bit:

wireless.png

The thing I'd point out is that "AC867", which they call "900" on the box, works out to be ~200Mbps when it's on its own in that test. It then drops down to 60Mbps when there are multiple, slower devices hammering the access point. It's an extreme example for sure but if that was wired? 1Gbps would give you around about 1Gbps. It's not anywhere near that for wireless.

@SaulGames

Wired is always going to be better every single time, it's just that it can be a bit of a pain to setup. If you want to do it properly that price doesn't seem too far off given the labour involved. Although how much I think it would cost is obviously skewed by Australian prices. So get some quotes. Always better to do it right the first time rather than spending a whole bunch of money trying a whole bunch of inferior options. At the very least get some quotes and then keep that price in mind as you look around at powerline/wireless gear.

But as others have said, finding a way to get your pet to not eat the cable might be the simplest option. I don't know how old your dog is but the dogs I've had all grew out of that phase after about a year. And if you think you'll be happy with the speeds you can get out of wireless/powerline? That's also an option. Just make sure you get an idea of what speeds you will actually get and whether or not that'll be enough. Maybe not best to ask on the forums though because a LOT of people are convinced that the option they settled on is the best. I personally tried them all.... before giving up and hiring a sparky to run Ethernet through the walls ;)
