HI ALL! I just built a new system for my bro

for storage i got him this: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/seagate-internal-hard-drive-st1000dm003

so it boots up beyond fast! i am not exaggerating

why does everyone still say i should have put the os on a ssd and then set up the hdd for mass storage

all on YT linus and jay and and syndicate all say "an ssd in this build is a no brainer!" WHY?!

ssd adds $100+ to the build i see no reeeaaaal benefit and reason to pay that

i dont understand it either. ssds should be for $1000+ builds, where you have the money to spend, where it wont hurt performance too much

It's fast as a clean install... Do updates, have apps loading and so on and it will slow down significantly.. especialy as time goes on and it fragments..

An SSD will be many times faster.. so even with the extra overhead it'll start in a few seconds.

The difference an SSD makes to overall system resposivness is incredible... You can get a decent 120GB SSD for $60.

Use an SSD extensively then go back to an HDD. You'll see why.

Cause after 1/3 to 1/2 full on a hdd, speeds tank. My two 1tb Seagates were at 200MB/s read and write, now one is 90/30, and the other is 100/50. Mainly cause they're around 4/5ths full. Then my 128GB ssd new was 512MB/s read, and 350MB/s write. Now 490MB/s read and 350MB/s write. Still getting 12 second boot times on Windows 7.

Edit: If you're wondering why one of my hdds is soo much slower than the other, its like 8-9 years old. No signs of failing yet.

Boot time are faster,OS's feel snappier, and everything that's stored on it opens quicker. It's a no brainer for anyone wanting a  fast PC. Is it necessary? No. But it will greatly improve the user experience.

Use an SSD then come back and ask the same question. Oh wait you wont have to.

SSDs make EVERYTHING many times faster than an HDD, main thing being boot up, my machine boots in like 4 seconds + post time

I've got that 240GB model. Long story short Sata II makes it seem slow (aka, Windows 7 takes longer to start up on it than Windows ME on my 20GB 5400RPM Spinpoint HDD).

I agree with OP I tried out SSDs and felt no perf increase

Open chrome as soonma sthe systems boots, Ssd will do it faster.

Heck, out of every part in my system, I consider my ssd the best

Lets all ripperoni in pepperoni

Yes.. but it doesn't matter, sata 2 performance is sata 2 performance.. SSD is still multiple times faster than HDD. Except maybe a 15k SCSI drive.. you have a problem some-where

adobe.jpg

And thats HDD on sata 3 vs SDD on sata 2..

Let me give an example.

BF4 HDD Loading times: 1 minutes 20 seconds(ish)

BF4 SSD Loading times: 37 seconds

Generally my game loading times double and over a large amount of play time, every day, every week technically I am saving more of my life.
