Dry Ice Vs LN2?

Crazy Idea but it would have to be slightly different because it is a solid not a liquid. I was thinking you could make a box that sits on the GPU and Vram that you either dump crushed Dry Ice in it or a block that fits perfectly and then put a lid on it allowing it to really cool down. Dry Ice is a lot hotter then LN2 but you can just go to a gas station and pick up 10 pounds for cheap. When LN2 is costly and used for labs mostly. Would this work? I would love to try it

You can use the same containers that you would use for liquid nitrogen but with crushed dry ice. But like ln2 its not very practical

Nope. even if you somehow managed to cool an even surface, you'd have to refill it every 30 minutes or so.

Do you know the rate of LN2?

I do, but i also know that LN2 covers the entire surface you're trying to cool. There's no way you'd be able to do that with dry ice, even if you tried to make it fine powder.

Crazy Idea but it would have to be slightly different because it is a solid not a liquid. I was thinking you could make a box that sits on the GPU and Vram that you either dump crushed Dry Ice in it or a block that fits perfectly and then put a lid on it allowing it to really cool down. Dry Ice is a lot hotter then LN2 but you can just go to a gas station and pick up 10 pounds for cheap. When LN2 is costly and used for labs mostly. Would this work? I would love to try it

LN2 is about -270ish centigrade when exposed to normal atmospheric conditions. (that's important if you're a chemist) Co2 at about -40 degrees sublimes. that is to say it converts from a solid state, to a gaseous state with no liquid state in between. I might be niaeve, but the biggest problem with LN2 overclocking is not freezing certain components. CO2 overclocking doesn't reduce them in temperature enough that superconductor elements of the components are worthwhile. With LN@ overclocking, you are trying to reduce the electrical resistance between components to such a degree that they become superconductive......Ordinary overclocking can't come close, no matter what you use. (CO2, phase change, or just plain water)

 

I could be wrong. I'm not an LN2 overclocker. And it's been over a decade since I was a chemist.

Wow. I never actually knew that, learn something new every day. I thought they just wanted it cold enough to run crazy clocks stable.

No, LN2 overclocking isn't about keeping the temperature under control to keep resistance, and as such voltage under control. It's about dropping the resistance of the metal to such a point that you literally have no resistance.

Absolutely not. Processors under LN2 don't come even close to being superconductive. It's actually bad to go below a certain temp as the system will become unstable again.

Certain components use metals that become superconductive when exposed to temperatures approaching absolute zero.... Ram chips do not. several other components do not as well I imagine. I'm not a LN2 overclocker, so I'm not sure what components need heat to work, I'd imagine anything with a crystalline structure actually needs heat. Anything that relies on metal conductivity I'd assume that close to zero conductivity would actually help.

 

What would I know. I just burn food for a living.

Dry ice cooling is a thing and dry ice is easier to obtain. The guy I bought my mobile off of had a 4790k at 5.8ghz on dry ice. Made me slightly worried since he did that on the board he replaced mine with.

Well, not every metal becomes superconductive above 0K and if you look at silicon, you need very specific boron doped Si to get it to be superconductive. Even then, you need the temp to be below 0.4K, what you won't reach with LN2 or even LHe.

 

The LN2 cooling is just to get the temps low enough to be able to crank the voltage up.

Doesn't hold weight. There is metal involved in the chipsets used for overclcocking. I'm not saying the silicon needs cooling way below the level of LN2 to become superconductive.

 

LN2 overclocking makes the metal involved in the chips become far more conductive than any level of cooling short of  basically anything approaching absolute zero could afford.

 

If you were just trying to control temperatures involved in overclocking then you'd throw your computer in your freezer.

 

Certain components do not respond well to extremely low temperatures as you've pointed out. Enough do that I can see extreme overclocking surviving for the next few years until the process size shrinks so much that adding 0.1V just makes the charge jump across the chip.

There is more to it than just the voltage, you can run 1.6v and 1.7v through a CPU on watercooling if you have a proper cooling solution for benchmarking, even with a crazy binned chip you may be lucky to hit over 5.2 ghz on a 4770k/4790k at 1.6 or 1.7v.   Cool that chip down into subzero, you'll easily be able to get another few hundred mhz out of it at the same voltage.

Getting the chip colder DOES increase stability at higher clock speeds, which is how people hit much higher frequencies with the same voltages.  Obviously they can add even more voltage on top of that, hence why we see people hitting 7 ghz on 4770k's and things of the sort.

 

That chip Linus had in his subzero build, it did what, 5ghz at 1.4v?  I guarantee it would of taken 1.5 or 1.6v to be stable at 5ghz on water.

I'm surprised no one mentioned one of the bigger problems with trying to use dry ice: the fact it's carbon dioxide. Now being heavier than air, it will sink to the floor, but that also means if you have pets or small children, it could be a danger if you use enough of it. But being too close to it -- which will probably be required while trying to use it as a cooling medium -- can also introduce an asphyxia danger. With liquid nitrogen, the nitrogen gas isn't going to be a danger anywhere nearly as fast. With dry ice, the CO2 that sublimates will become a danger much faster.

 

For that reason alone I'd say to not even consider using it unless you're in a very, very well ventilated area.

The thread may have derailed but I actually learned a lot so I am not frustrated at all. Also you need  a lot of CO2 to suffocate and I would have windows open any way. To all saying it's a bad idea, well I'll probably get a computer that is meh and see how far I can go with it on dry ice.
