What does the X mean?

They are different graphics processors.

The 390X should get more fps in games for a higher price.

X usually has more cores than the non-x version

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

meh. find an 8GB 290x. It'll do the same for 150 bucks less.

 

Unless of course 8GB at AMD really means 9GB

We don't. We do know it's an enhanced chip that's been enhanced before, on a 3 year lifecycle. There aren't that many surprises left it can give us. I'd be surprised if the 390x can give us more than an "actual " 8GB 970.
