760 SLI or...

Okay so, at the moment I have a GTX 760, I'm ordering my i5 4690k, 16gb 1600mhz, new ssd and all that other fun stuff. I'm wondering, should I keep the 760 i have at the moment and just SLI it? Or buy a 970/980/980ti? I'll be on 1080p, maybe 1440p at a later date.

EDIT: I also have a 780w 80 Bronze PSU so SLI will be easily achievable.

Less problems with a single card config so I would go with a single card.

An AMD cpu has no place in a solely gaming build, end of.

sell 760, buy 970 or second hand 980 if they are looking any cheaper since the ti came out

Edit: noticed you said 970/980/ti whats your budget?

Yea I have the budget, but my only question is, is the 980ti overkill for 1080p-1440p gaming?

I had 2 760 and when the scaling was good they absolutely kicked ass. scores on firestrike are comparable to my fairly overclocked 780ti, however the point about scaling is the problem. With more and more games coming out unfinished, and with poor optimization, a dual gpu card will start falling behind. 2gb of vram is also not ideal in this day and age (will depend on the games yo intend to play as well)

I would just reccomend with going for a better single card

970<sli 760s<980<980ti

Amd cards are also worth looking at, with the new fury series looking very competitive...

Heyyo,

Exactly. I myself have a Two-Way GTX 680 2GB SLI setup and I run out of VRAM before my GPU useage hits 80% on GTA V, Dragon Age: Inquisition and The Witcher 3. I use a 1080P monitor btw.

If you're going to stick with 1080 or jump to 1440? Meh, I'd get a single GTX 970 with a good aftermarket cooler (avoid reference cooler tbh) so you have better thermals and the possibility to overclock in the future. It's a damn good card. I wouldn't really bother buying a GTX 980 ti for 1440P... that is, unless you want to be future-proof at full graphics for about two years or more and have high graphics for about four years. How long do you plan on keeping the current parts?

for 1080p it's overkill for most games (the exception is GTA V and some more) for 1440p it is a really good choice

generally yes. will be very good at 1440p, but will be a silly investment for 1080p

After I order my new pc as I mentioned, I'd like to keep it for at least 3-5 years before buying a new one.

a 980ti will not max out all games at 1440p, but don't get me wrong, it is a good choice OP

I'd buy one but my 290's serve me well enough.

1440P, GTA V on High settings with MSAA 2x (to keep it fair with the GTX 970 SLI's lower VRAM) gets 94fps on his system setup. That's plenty good. He could probably play on Very High on a GTX 980 ti with GTA V and get 60fps.

Tomshardwareguide achieved settings on Very High with a kind-of similar PC build.

It's pretty freaking impressive though that the GTX 980 ti equals the same strength as two GTX 970 GPUs.

First of all you should wait and see how AMDs re branded 300 series and their new fury series cards benchmarks.

Second, how long to you plan holding on to this? Are you going to upgrade once the next generation comes out?

Either way, if you're going for a Fury x or a 980Ti you should also get a new 2560x1440 monitor. If you want to stay at 1080p, a 970/390/390x will be enough, but if you have the cash a 980/390x is more future proof.

Motherboard: Asus X570-E

that was with advanced off iirc. with everything maxed out i get about 40fps on 1080p (now i use all very high and high resolution shadows off and 8x msaa i get about 60 fps adn uses 3700mb vram) BTW i notice no differenct between <3500 and >3500 and no cpu bottleneck

It's pretty well suited to running most games at max detail at 1440p. I would say it's a little overdoing it for 1080p. If you're only at 1080p, I'd go with a GTX 970 or 980 at the most.

I would suggest either the 290X, or wait a little bit for the R9 Fury Nano or R9 Fury. If you even consider a 980TI, then these would be better choices, not beacause the 980Ti isnt better then these, it is. But because at higher resolutions, AMD seem to scale better (get better FPS in general) then Nvidia. So if you decide to get a 1440p monitor in the future, AMD may give you slightly better FPS in general (bare in mind that certain games perform differently on different cards).

Is this not reference?

LOL. Sorry. Kinda out of the 970 loop, was just saying that because at launch there were no reference cards, so I thought there just straight up wouldn't be one.
