What do you think of young techies?

Panzer003

Meh,

They know so much because of their job / hobby.

Linus used to work at NCIX (Computer parts) and as a computer fixer (Evidence can be seen in his Ultimate TechBag video)

+ The fact that they grew up with all the hardware/software releases : DOS(Maybe) .... Windows 95 .... Windows 10 helps A lot.

Nowadays kids (in my country) don't even learn a basic thing in Computer Class. They get this : Windows Folder structure, basic networking (never having to connect a network themselves), Powerpoint, Word and GameMaker ... They don't even see basic programming, a bit of command line or simply the workings/ internals of a pc.

I (luckily) had some computer education by my dad/myself and primary school (only the hardware part: We happened to get an afternoon to dissassemble 40pc's or so for parts... Was fun!)

It's kind of the same for me, In Business Computing Applications. We get taught MS Excel, PP etc.

But, we also did a unit on the Insides and Outs of Computers, I, got a A+. (Not surprised)

You know its quite common for people to feel ashamed of themselves when they're outsmarted by someone younger than them...

In this particular scenario more so because of my background in IT work...

Agree with that, but that should be a motivation to learn more

well i have to say that irl i probably wouldnt ask or listen to somebody that is only 13-14. but thats probably because most of them here have self esteem through the roof and cant even imagine that they could be wrong. on the forum it doesnt matter since i dont really look at who is writing i dont even look at avatars that much i just look at the content.

if what youre saying makes sense then its fine. if we would to be disagreeing on something id probably use that fact. but only because at least here teens are stupid and way to confident about there stupidness. ive yet to meet reasonable teens but hey im willing to be disproved.

"You know it'll clock down as soon as it hits 40°C, right?" - "Yeah ... but it doesnt hit 40°C ... ever  😄"

As long as you are giving valid advice and staying ontopic then you are no different from a 30 year old on this forum.

I see a lot of adults on this forum saying stupid things.

This.

As long as you give valid advice WITH legitimate information/proof to support what you are saying or doing, then I see no problem in that.

  • No fanboy BS
  • No "GT 620 with 4GB of VRAM is super fast" (or similar)
  • No ridiculous recommendations (i.e. GTX 980Ti for office PC)

Age doesn't matter.

There are a plenty of people in the LTT community who are younger than I am, and are quite knowledgeable on computer and technological devices.

Then again, you will every so often run into those individuals who are in your age range, or even in their 20's or 30's, who act like immature cocky people.

Put on your spooderman disguise, so they can't identify you.

In all honesty, if you can't drop the #PCMasterRace  #ConsolePeasant #5GHzMasterRace for those situations, then you shouldn't be helping people.

There is a time for everything -- use it when applicable.

Example:

Some 40 year old man wants you to help him build a office PC with no intention to game or render; pure office productivity.

You wouldn't build a PC with a i7-5960X + full custom water loop + two GTX 980 Ti's + Corsair 900D

If a friend wants to build the ultimate triple display gaming rig, and price is no an issue. Sure.

Age shouldn't necessarily be used to determine someone's knowledge on a particular topic.

Personally for me, the most unlikely techie in the world, like a six-year-old girl or something, if they showed a genuine interest in computers and could take the matter maturely enough, I'd be all for getting them started off learning about this sort of thing. You'd be surprised how quickly kids can pick things up if they have their hearts set on it. That's just my take though. I love getting schooled and called out by kids. it serves as a reminder to me that I'm not as smart as I like to think.

Speaking as a 30-year old, I'll say that age doesn't mean anything. It's more about the attitude. If you're very knowledgeable, humble and level headed, you will get as much respect as anyone of any age, plus a bonus "Wow he's so young and he knew a lot! What a smart kid!".. well.. maybe.

Some older people might feel hurt having someone younger than them knowing more, but don't you think that kind of mindset is a little bit childish?

Keyword is being humble, no point acting like you know more than you actually do. You'll just make a joke out of yourself when someone actually pointed out your mistake.

ps. I was once young and stupid, I thought I was best in school as far as pc built, did the same thing what people do on pcpartpicker nowadays, but with pen and paper. Until one day I met my match, and then met my match who's much younger, and then met a 14-year-old who codes better than I am and 8 years younger than me. I'd like to think I'm more mellow now.

If I don't know something, I have friends my age who know a lot about computers.

Born too early to explore the galaxy, born too late to explore the seas, born just in time to make memes.

Age does generally matter, but not all the time.

Generally Kids (younger people) tend to be more obnoxious with their responses and give off vibes which can annoy older people (anyone really).

These vibes would be similar to:

"How do you not know that? are you dumb?"

"such an easy problem I dont know how you didnt fix it"

Or they dont understand the politics involved, especially in a corporate environment.

It's not your age, it's your attitude
