I apologize for the lollerskates terrible doc this week... This is seriously what I was working off of. I had time to read everything, but not actually make a proper doc :P

OSX El Capitan

  • New gestures for things like popping out the mouse cursor and marking emails important or delete - not groundbreaking

  • Safari pinned sites.. preloading is really cool, mute other tabs is sorta handy

  • Spotlight can be resized and moved now… but more importantly you can search with natural terms. Stuff like “documents I worked on last june” was pretty impressive to me.

  • Window management - expose of other windows when side snapping is freaking awesome. Too bad MS hasn’t improved Aero snap signfiicantly since launch.. What’d we get vertical resizing.. :(

  • Performance optimization - 4x PDF opening performance, 2x app switching - anyone else think they’re moving ot mobile CPUs in OSX? Metal graphics API is basically the Apple answer to DX12. 50% faster rendering, 40% reduction in CPU for graphics, better for compute as well - claiming better than OpenCL and OpenGL. AfterEffects 8x AE effects rendering performance improvement.

iOS

  • suggesting who someone might be for unknown numbers - bloody mystery that no one else has ever done this. Bleeping awesome.

  • Improved search with suggested people, apps, nearby locations, and news. Video search (vimeo, YouTube). Added API for search with deep linking support within the apps they have installed.

  • Proactive app suggestions - music when you plug in a headphone jack for example, meditation app in the morning was in the demo but I’d be interseted to see if it suggests gmail for me first thing in the morning since that’s usually what I launch.

  • Apple Pay support from Square, 2x app checkout rates reported by developers.. Damn., Pinterest support for buying stuff directly,  rewards programs,

  • Maps now supports transit with some smart additions like including multiple entrances and exists for subway stations - only a few cities to start

  • App switcher & multi tasking with slide-over. Clicking the divider lets the apps run side by sdie fully interactive

  • Dramatically improved cursor and highlighting features - copy, paste buttons - Quicktype Keyboard

  • Picture in picture video watching. Kinda fantastic.

Home Kit - Window shades, CO sensors, security systems, remote home access via iCloud.

  •

watchOS 2

  • allows native apps (including fitness), new more informative watch faces with dynamic information forward and backward in time using the time travel feature.

  • nightstand mode

  • improved contact sorting on the watch

  • email replies supported

Apple Music

  • 24/7 radio

  • artist/fan interaction with Connect - artists can upload music, videos, photos to a fan.

  •
Oculus Launch Date and Final Hardware Confirmed

Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Lord Sparklebottom

Source 2:

  • Deisgn looks much more consumer friendly but at the end of the day any modern VR headset is going to be a gignatic pair of ski goggles on your face until this crap can be miniaturized in a VERY significant manner

  • Lenses can be adjusted wider or narrower

  • “It’s very light and balanced” but no specifics were given.

  • Ships with Xbox One controller and headtracking camera that looks kinda like a little film tube on top of a stand. It’s amazing how good photography (renders in this case even) can make a webcam on a mic stand look elegant. Too bad it super duper won’t look like that when it’s on your desk with all the other crap on your desk.

  • on ear “VR Audio” headphones are built in, but thankfully they can be removed if you have decent headphones.

  • Native support in Windows 10 - lord knows that’ll be a better experience than the DK2 Luke has.

  • Showed off “half moon” prototype of Oculus Touch controller

  • Wireless, lightweight, traditional inputs, gestures, hand tracking, communicative gestures

  • Oculus Hub announced - place to buy VR games, add friends, etc. I’ll be surprised if this isn’t tied into FB somehow.

  • Specs - “custom OLED displays iwht low persistance, new tracking system”

  • Available Q1 2016 with Oculus Touch pre-orders openeing at the same time and shipping in 1H 2016

YouTube Gaming

Source 1: linustechtips OP: Bouzoo

Source 2: polygon

  • Obvious response to Twitch’s dominance in the live game streaming space

  • Dedicated pages for games to see live and archived content

  • Commitment from YT that gaming will no longer be lost in a sea of other content

  • archiving looks like an obvious

  • not clear how live interaction will be handled, but Hangouts broadcasts already have something similar to Twitch chat

  • DVR and better latency between streamer and chat could be a huge selling factor. Also they promise “instant notifications when live streams go up” this could be a HUGE boon as well since Twitch is notoriously poor at it.

  • Will have to find a way to compete on the relationships side as well to capture e-Sports teams and competitions - something YouTube hasn’t done particularly well excluding Music.

Samsung Shows off Mirror and Transparent OLED Displays

Source 1: Hexus

  • Pitching them for use in retail stores - self modeling clothes “virtual fitting room”

  • Could be installed in automobiles to show pertinent information

  • Mirror display has 75% reflectance

  • Transparent display about 40% transparency “4x better than competitors” but not actually since LG demo’ed 30% not that long ago (albeit much smaller) but definitely ahead of the game since LG figured they needed until 2017 to reach 40%

I must be honest, I do look forward to seeing the R9 390X in the flesh - I think the AMD Refresh of GPUs may help balance the playing field out in the Graphics Card Sector...

Also, I see I've been talked about, what's going on?  :P

@LinusTech

The reason I said that because member like VS did it before and they didn't call it official thread and I covered windows 10 briefing and didn't call it official thread, yes making it is nice but what if another member wanted to cover it too ?? does that make his thread like "unofficial" ? waste of time that he covered it ?

Wheels needs his own show.  What he said was informative and you could see he was holding back.  Watch out The WAN Show as there may be a better show for us to follow if Wheels does something about it.
Now as for the entire show The WAN Show this week well it was entertaining and informative.  I did not like the way Linus treated Wheels at the beginning but I am used to getting disappointed lately with certain things that go on in relation to LMG so it is what it is.  Hopefully certain things go away from LMG in the future and I can enjoy it in it's entirety like I used to.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

Main reasons I don't switch to vessel:

Interface: I like youtube's subscription feed page which shows me which videos have come out and marks the ones I've already watched as watched, this way I can watch every video my favourite content providers put out without missing anything. To get to the equivalent page in vessel I just scroll down on home page until I get to the latest for you section, would be nice if it had a separate page for this. Also viewing the site on a 27" monitor, the video icons seem unnecessarily large, they should have better scaling for PC.

Features: Vessel doesn't seem to track which videos I've already watched, I find this handy on youtube since I don't always remember the title of the last video I watched.

General: I'm not terribly interested in wandering around looking for good videos to watch since I already watch 4-8 hours of youtube a day, that seems to be vessel's target consumer and much less so the people who subscribe to specific content providers. Really does vessel offer anything to my type of user besides an extra week of content?

I don't get why people complain about how Linus treats people. He's clearly just comfortable with Wheels and jokes around with him by fake-insulting him, something that's super common amongst friends. Is that somehow just a Canadian thing? In any case, surely this is not the first time Wheels has encountered this behaviour and he would not have shown up if didn't still like Linus.

Hey Linus as a teacher... That would probably raise class attendance scores! The only downside is no more d**k jokes lol

Appreciate the love. I'm not going to do my own show because of the immense effort that goes into the Wan show.

I will however do what I can to be involved in the LTT community and appear on a video from time to time. (if Linus allows me to)

Thanks for watching and I'll always be around if you need another tech perspective.

Trust me this is far from terrible treatment. I always say that the way you can tell somebody's your friend is if you can have fun at each others' expense.

Linus and I have known each other for awhile now. Next time I'll be prepared to jab him back.
