OC Question - i5 4690k and FX 8350

I have a question. How far can you overclock an i5 4690k or a FX 8350 when you're using a Hyper 212 EVO as a cooler? The PSU that is being used is an EVGA Supernova B2 750W 80+ Bronze (actually Silver).

The 4690k will overclock better and perform better both with/without the overclock over the FX8350.

You can get a decent overclock with the i5, I think the FX produces more heat so a lower overclock. 

 

If you are looking for which one to buy; get the i5.  Far better single core performance, and stronger overall cores.  Also if you get a Z97 board you can always upgrade to an i7, or even Broadwell.

You can with the i5 but the 8350 runs hot so you wouldnt get a very good overclock on air. I have tried on an air cooler rated better than the hyper 212, couldnt get the 8350 stable and the cooler was too hot to touch. AMD has a huge range between good and bad overclockers.

The 4690k will overclock better and perform better both with/without the overclock over the FX8350.

It depends on the silicon lottery and i've seen 8350's destroy 4690k's in multithread.

Highest LTT user submitted Cinebench R15 Multi-thread result for an AMD FX CPU was obtained by @Priller which is an experienced overclocker at a whooping 5.3295ghz (nowhere near stable and practicle i assume..) he got a score of 842.

Highest LTT user submitted Cinebench R15 Multi-thread result for an i5-4690K CPU was obtained by @ProKoN which is also an experienced overclocker at a whooping 5.1ghz (nowhere near stable and practicle i assume..) he got a score of 788.

842/788= 1.068527918781726

So a small difference of 6.8%...and the AMD is running 300mhz faster...i wouldn't call that a ''destroy''.

Theres only a couple skilled overclockers on LTT, go check HWBOT for multithreaded benchmarks, it gets slapped.

 

core clock > core scaling.

If you need single core performance go i5 if you need more treads go FX! :D

 

FX-8350 will get a massive boost when DX12 comes along but the i5-4690K may still be better. ^_^

 

Still the first line is best advice over 2nd line. :P

For the FX-8350 the sky is pretty much the limit with a 212 EVO. The FX outputs more heat but is able to distribute it more easily to get the heat away from the processor cores. I'm at 1.4v on my FX-6300 4.2ghz and my max temp is 50DC with 27DC ambient room temperature. As for the i5 AFAIK it stays hotter due to the smaller die size not being able to distribute heat as well

Umm around 4.5GHZ at like 1.38V i guess on a 8350......wrong my bad.....around 1.44 on like 4.5GHZ if your lucky enough
