  • Old laptop with core2duo @ 2ghz , 3Gigs
  • no money for an ssd for this
  • need for storage and internet only

 

Any ideas for the best OS?

Linux or 8.1.

8.1 runs well on old crap since it runs well on low power tablets.

Lubuntu or Linux Mint, or Puppy Linux. They eat the least resources and have some of the lowest hardware requirements out there.

Lubuntu.  It is the lightest of the *buntu, and has the same support, which is nice.  I wouldn't recommend Puppy Linux if you want mostly pain-free operations.

-Elementary OS- My recommendation, looks great and runs great, I keep it on an old 1.7GHz single core, 1GB RAM, integrated GPU laptop. :)

It's hard learning the curves of Ubuntu, but trust me, you'll stay up all night experimenting what you can do with it.

Notice, that not every software run on Linux.
