Dual Channel RAM?

Go to solution Solved by Hieb,

All RAM must run at the same frequency and timings on a motherboard, regardless of the number of channels.

Dual-channel means that with same-capacity module(s) in each channel the system can access both simultaneously to have the ability to write and read at the same time. Most mATX and ATX motherboards have 4 memory slots, 2 channels. So there are 2 slots in each channel.

In order to operate in dual-channel mode, both channels must have identical capacity RAM. Each channel is treated as one giant module, even if it is comprised of two modules.

So for example if you fill your 4 RAM slots with 4GB DIMMs in each, your motherboard will treat it as 2x 8GB modules and can access both channels simultaneously.

Dual channel is a technology that essentially lets RAM operate more efficiently/effectively. It's not a matter of using different types. Frequency will have to be the same (it will default to the lowest speed if they are different). The board has two channels for RAM, with two slots for each channel (totalling 4 slots). Slots 1 and 3 are channel A/1 and slots 2 and 4 are channel B/2.

Dual channel means you'll use two sticks of ram for best performance. Dual channel memory doesn't exist.

Just to clarify my motherboard (The Asrock Z87 Extreme 4) is Dual channel Ram, If I am correct that means that I can use 2 different types of ram. Please correct me if I am wrong. Do they need to be the same frequency?

dual channel means that you are running two ram sticks or four ram sticks, which improves speed, you should always use the exact same ram sticks.
