G'day fellows,
I am looking at building a budget-esque system with the G3258 anniversary edition as the CPU and there's no point really in buying that unless you plan on over clocking, so I was wondering if anyone has that CPU along with the Noctua NH-U9B. It'd be good if someone knew or would be able to guestimate what kind of overclocks I could be doing.

It all depends for each chip, your overclock result might be worse or better than someone else's. There's no point comparing and trying to achieve a same overclock as someone else as your chip is different.

I got mine to 4.4 and it ran nicely in some games. (war thunder, tf2) Could not handle gta or bf4. The fps was at 25-30. I replaced it with 4690k and now it never goes under 60. I cant get it to.

Get an i3 or 860K. You will find stuttering and low frame dips plus some games like FC4 already don't even work with 2 threads.

OC is random you will never know how much more you will get. :)

 

But with a water cooler you should get the highest stable OC the chip will do.

The specifics of the cooler really do not seem to matter much for Pentium overclocks. With only two cores it really isn't putting out tons of heat. It's more a matter of the lottery.

In general I wouldn't plan on getting an OC above 4.4 - 4.5 GHz. Not to say that you won't do better, just that it is less likely.

mine will top out at 4.4 under a hyper 212 on a b85 board. On z87 though under my NH-D14 it could get stable at 4.7 with way to much voltage and went all the way to 5ghz in the link in my sig.

Running mine at 4.2 (with determined voltages and such via Asrock's OC presets) would run fine and cool enough on my system for most games, but in something like GTAV I was getting horrendous stutters until I dialed it back to a 4.0 (again with voltages and such controlled by the presets) and I can hit about 40+ average fps when paired with an EVGA GTX 750ti. Guess that's about the limits or the chip, or would you recommend maybe pushing a little more voltage? I want to say that the 4.0 was a 1.24v and the 4.2 was 1.28...Linus's video had it sitting around 1.3v, think that would help?

The CPU will be obsolete (or you will buy an i5 probably) before it has a real degradation from running it at 1.3-1.35V (2 years or so).

 

Zen will come in 2016 with haswell IPC (or even more some people say) and SMT (like intel's hyperthreading) so G3258 will become even worse
