Should I sell my 290x and get a 980ti?

Darkr

Okay guys. So I recently got a 290x for pretty cheap (250 euro) on ebay. I currently got 1k euro. The 980ti came out for 600 euro. I got a 1920x1080p monitor. I'm planning to get a 4k monitor to game on. I love witcher 3 and it kills me not being able to have hairworks enabled with my amd card.

So the question is- I think I'll be able to resell my card for 250 euro on ebay. Should I sell it, buy a 980ti and a 4k pb287q monitor (both costing me 1k altogether) and save up the rest? That'll give me 250 euro left over.

I really want to know your oppinion. Thanks guys<3

What CPU do you have?

In general, yes, it would be a good idea for 4K.

EDIT: I feel like there should be a 980Ti FAQ. So many 980Ti threads.

If you are going to be getting a 4k monitor, then it will be worth it.

With AMD's 300 series just around the corner?  With HBM memory and huge 4k gaming potential?

Just wait a bit and see what they have to offer.  It's what I'd do.

Okay guys. it kills me not being able to have hairworks enabled with my amd card.

Why can't you...  the fix is known...

Make a AMD CCC control panel profile for Witcher 3, set Tesselation to 8x or 16x, so it wont use the 64x that the game uses (for little to no visual benefit) Then go to the config file and set hairworksAA to 4x, instead of the default 8x.

Hairworks is no longer a major isue for AMD cards with these things done. The FPS drop is way way way way way less than what it was..

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Amd has been doing some hyping (if thats a word) about their new HBM tech, so I would wait and see what they have up their sleeve...

Thanks for the answers!

The only thing is, I figure if I wait the value of my r9 290x will plumit to the ground and I'll end up selling it for 100 euro... But if I sell it now, I'll be refunded the cost.

A 980ti and PB278Q will cost more than 1000EUR and I doubt you'll be able to get 250 for your 290X but yes, it'll definitely be worth the upgrade if you;re going to 4k.

You are not the only one... hairworks does not do well on Kepler, so my framerates half with it enabled even with lowered tessellation, and aa.

A few things i've learned in the past few months: linus is one hell of a seller lol.

And, currently, theres no gpu that can handle 4k at good frame rate, so if you want to play @ 4k, just wait.

Just wait for R9 390X / Fury, not point and buying a 980ti off the bat wait for it to get benched along side 390/X :)

AMD new graphic cards are around the corner. It may force nvidia to drop there prices or new amd cards may be better.

I'd say be patient.

I suggest waiting for the AMD's new releases and check them out before buying. And on the other hand, the 290X is still a very powerful card, if Nvidia and AMD are to be believed, the next generation after this will be the "leap", of course... not that they could be believed so easily, but I'd say that for now, hold off on 4K, I believe 30-50FPS is what seem to be the average FPS for many 4K games at the moment with a single powerful card, not that worth it.

This is in my opinion, of course.
