I actually messaged Nick with an idea or two of my own for the third installment of Scrapyard Wars.

 

They can build whatever systems they want, for $500, but NO HAND TOOLS. All building must be done solely with their hands, no coins, nothing, literally just their hands.

 

OR

 

They can't use any pre-made PC case, but the components must be housed in something. Meaning no putting the system together ontop of a wooden table and just called it done.

 

I like your second idea. They could probably recycle an old scrapyard wars machine for this one and just try to make the best case they can for it

I enjoyed the scrapward series. I was able to show some of my friends that even though the low end hardware in the video is old it can still game fairley well. I started with a q6600 and a 5750 and was able to game fine, even till this day. Although I havent used that rig in a while.

If you always do what you always did you will always get what you always got.

Would it be viable to store your reservoir in a freezer whilst the PC is running and either not have a radiator, or even just use both.

 

Obviously this wouldn't be your best option but just thinking of it since the episode is about makeshift water cooling ;)

No, this wouldn't work. The water gets warm, but probably not warm enough to keep it from freezing. Plus, how on earth do you suppose you're going to get a tube in there with the door closed? Cause if you know anything about Linus, you know that the door isn't going to be kept open cause it's a waste of energy to keep refrigerator doors open and Linus isn't going to pay for the extra energy wasted on this idea. 

 

Not the worst thought in the world though, perhaps running the tubes through something cold instead of using a radiator would work

I'd have thought there'd be a good enough way of getting a seal on the freezer if you thought hard enough about it. And with regards to the water freezing, I'd have thought it would be able to heat the water up above freezing, plus if that was the case you're actually in a good position because you could adjust the temperature of the freezer to find a sweet spot where the water is cold but not freezing.

 

I'm aware that i'm defending a bit of a stupid idea, but I thought I'd still try to counter your points ;)

 

And yeah like a condensing tube you might find in a lab, just run tap water through a glass tube with 2 compartments haha.

My thought since part A was to mod an OEM heatsink CPU by drilling holes and running copper pipes through it and have them pressure fitted in, would that be allowed? Then have connectors on the the pipes for the tubing. The strategy could also be used to modify and fabricate what you need for the gpu full water block.

Anything goes, except for using or modifying any off the shelf parts made for PC cooling. So technically, modding an oem heatsink doesn't fly in this case.

I reckon Lukes will be the most cringeworthy, because he's using a waterbottle as a reservoir, whereas linus is actually thinking outside the box with the copper tubing. plus he's got room to play with getting it right, whilst Lukes scrap of copper piping will have to be used fault free.

Ok, I need to rewatch the first one then, cause I thought they were referring to that they were not allowed to use off the shelf water cooling parts.

So an air-heatsink being turned into a water cooled heatsink is not off the shelf water cooling. You could also do the same plan with a block of aluminum or copper.

Good on Luke for getting a heater core rad, I would have figured that or a oil cooler for the smaller size. Could you imagine the awesome ghettoness of a small car main coolant radiator in the build, maybe even make it a feature.

With modifications it would work well. I mainly would use it for the solid no hassle mounting, and cheap sourcing. Yeah, that's an easy thing to fabricate but why bother. Basically I would be running a heat pipe type config through the block filled with water going to the rest of the scrapyard loop, essentially water cooling the block. It avoids some of the more sketchy planned assemblies that have been discussed (I only just finished part C). The incidental additional cooling of the air fins might help avoid catastrophic failure in the setup and testing process.

The incidental additional cooling of the air fins might help avoid catastrophic failure in the setup and testing process.

 

It's probably also more expensive to modify an air cooled block just for the mounting hardware instead of making it themselves. If you watch part D, you can tell that making mounting hardware is no problem as evidenced by Luke
