Regarding upgrading to windows 10 for free.

leelaa14

So I'm wondering how this upgrade works, if I have windows 8, I upgrade and then it's mine to keep, do I have to install windows 8 first whenever I format my pc and then re download windows 10? Or do you think the serial I enter for windows 8 will become a valid windows 10 key?

Windows 10 will be given as a free upgrade via Windows Update to ensure that you have a legitimate copy of either Windows 7 or 8/8.1. To do a "clean" install of Windows 10, once you have upgraded, you will have to re-install Windows 7/8/8.1 and then install all updates before being able to update to Windows 10.

Hmm, that's what I was thinking.

Maybe I will put off buying a windows key and just buy a oem windows 10 when it releases.

Thanks for the reply.

Just a small correction, I don't think you can upgrade directly from windows 8, you need to be in Windows 8.1 or 7 to upgrade to Windows 10.

By installing all updates on Windows 8, you will get to Windows 8.1 and then get to upgrade to Windows 10.

Yes, exactly I am just putting it out there to avoid any confusion for anyone.

I just saw earlier on the forum that Windows 10 was gonna retail for around 130$, for a new build could I just get a 85$ copy of Windows 7 (or probably even cheaper if I look around) and upgrade it to Windows 10 .. ? :P

As long as it's a genuine OS it should work. Wait.... Windows 10 pricing to be at 130$ !!! I don't think Microsoft said anything about a retail price  :o

I saw this on another topic this morning, there were images of the Newegg price. I said 130$ on top of my head, it might be a bit less than that, or 130$ might be for the Professional version.

Or you just keep a slipstreamed version of 8.1 with all updates on the disc and use that to install with then the upgrade is a few clicks away.

Would still prefer an actual key for 10 though, its gonna get old quick having to install 2 OSes every time I reinstall. Thank god for Windows Image :)

Found it... it's 109$ for the home and it even states the release date is end of August, 2015.
