Core i7 or core i5

I'm starting a new job soon and we use virtual machines to run the software from the company. Should I save the $100 and get a i5 or should I get the i7 for the extra $100.

Virtual Machines benefit heavily from more threads. Go i7.

Get a Xeon, works through virtual machines like a boss and better than an i7 if you are not Ocing.

The Xeon 1231v3 is indeed a sensible option as others have mentioned, and a product with a very good price/performance ratio.

For your intended usage, I would advise against an i5.

Running Linux in VMWare is snappy as hell on my Xeon E3-1231v3. Damn I love this CPU.

Just make sure your BIOS is new enough, and update if not.

Bare in mind Xeon doesn't have an iGPU. You'll need a video card if you don't already have one.

i7 is much better than a i5 but if you are gaming then i5 is enough for that i5 is just for gaming you can edit do live streaming but it will be slower than a i7 if you are using it for only gaming then go for a i5 editing and other stuffs need a i7
