Do quantum computers use the D ;) wave

It's not a real one. It uses just this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_tunnelling. A real Quantum computer is expected in the next 30-50 years.

“The paper, which first appeared as a preprint earlier this year, concludes that the processor – built by the controversial Canadian firm D-Wave Systems – offers no advantage over a conventional computer when it is used to solve a benchmark computing problem.”

It's like the first relay based computer. It can calculate something but it's not really useful.

But it does cost 10M $ a piece....

The very first "compters" weren't cheat either.

By the way quantum technology is used the most new casios, since it allows you to build a pure random generator, that you can't fool.

Also quantum cryptography was used during the soccer championship in South Africa because it can not be hacked.

Huge amount of money is used for research in quantum technologie. But it will take an other 50 years to see it spead in more than a few very specific fields.

There are still doubts regarding D-Wave, as they have not really demonstrated anything useful on their machines. Quantum computers might as well be considered vaporware for now.

Theories concerning AI are circling the use of these computers. D-Wave is Canadian based and so far is the only one I know of who sells them. Just a minor curiosity on my part. 10 to 15 mil a pop is not in the budget, unless I win the lottery. Although it might be a good investment opportunity at present.
