New build vs SLI-ing second hand hardware.

Go to solution Solved by Sauron,

We don't know what the alternative would be...

that said 1000€ isn't exactly cheap for that build, and the 8350 will be holding back the 290x. I'd recommend building something like this instead:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($259.86 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Asus Z97-A ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($128.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($68.98 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 290X 4GB Tri-X Video Card  ($319.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Thermaltake VL80001W2Z ATX Mid Tower Case  ($33.30 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $956.71
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

-edit-
since someone pointed it out, I know the prices here are in $. I just wanted to make you a parts list. The price shouldn't be that far off where you live, and this build would be superior to the one your linked.

My friend is planning on getting a new desktop soon, and plans on following PCGamer's high-end build guide.

His budget is around 1800€, though he'd want to save money where possible.

I, however, was browsing tweedehands (tldr a dutch ebay so to speak), and found this gem, for 1000€. I suggested getting that and spending the rest of his budget getting SLI and maybe watercooling.

Because I don't want to steer him wrong, as he's seriously considering it, I'd like your opinions on the two different setups.

EDIT: updated the link to PCGamer's build guide, forgot to add it, sorry.
EDIT2: added his budget.

That rig is not worth 1000€. The cpu will bottleneck the gpu and for the same money, you could make a way better rig.

EDIT:

I would try snatching up that 290x if Ι cοuld.

Mobo: Gigabyte 970A-DS3P CPU: AMD FX 8350 RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury DDR3 8gb (2x4gb@1600Mhz) GPU: Gigabyte R9 280x (factory oc) PSU: Thermaltake SmartSE 730w Case: Corsair 200R

Not the point, that build would be better. And shouldn't be much more expensive.

Thank you very much. I updated my original post with his budget and the link to PCGamer's build guide, if that'll change anything.

As far as I know, (to add more detail) he wants 1080p gaming, high-ultra end of the spectrum.

Well that second hand build is not worth the price, I would make a new build if I were you.

Another question is, what would an acceptable price be for the second build? Because maybe we could get the seller to lower it.

For 1080p 1 970 should be more then enough. Just keep the money for the second 970 in your pocket.

Thanks :)

FYI prices actually (can) differ quite a lot, because of the vastly different tax. A good example would be the Aorus X7 laptop, which you can get around 2000$-ish in teh US, but costs around 2300€-ish when buying it in Europe.

(I researched that in the beginning of the previous school-year though, so prices could have changed)

Sadly nothing. He has a (gaming) laptop as far as I know, currently.
