Hi guys,

I'm looking to get a 5 port gigabit switch  switch for my bedroom. I want something that does wireless too, but I've always been confused here.. if I want something that acts like a switch, allowing me more network cables in the room, but also handles wifi, do I need an access point?

Could someone help clear this up for me and suggest something thats best for my needs? I'm getting around 230mb down and 100mb up with my network cable going straight from my pc to router and I'd like to keep these speeds up.

I've got two pc's that do a lot of downloading, streaming, run vm's and file share. I'd also have consoles and laptops etc..

Thanks  :)

So you're looking for a router? Because you want wireless features too?

I have never come across a regular switch with wireless features too.

And with 5 port switch, do you want to be able to connect 5 devices to it? Because with a 5 port switch, 1 of the ports would be occupied by the cable with the 'incoming' internet traffic (which is towards/from your router) so you would only be able to connect 4 devices to a 5 port switch.

As for switches or routers, look for something gigabit. That is what you would want.

This switch is pretty good:

Get a wireless router like this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-RT-N66U-Wireless-streaming-Warranty/dp/B007W16SMO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1432050372&sr=8-1&keywords=gigabit+wifi+router

5 port gigabit ones can be expensive but by the looks of your internet speeds you may not have money troubles

Also, where do you live and who is your ISP? I don't know any ISPs near me that offer speeds like that.

You can use a wireless router and turn off DHCP/Turn on WAP mode for what you need.

Here is the problem.

99% of Wireless routers have only 4 ports. You may still need to get another switch. So, while if you only needed 4 ports, you could get something like:

http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-Archer-C2-Wireless-Gigabit/dp/B00KATWRIY/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1432050351&sr=1-3&keywords=gigabit

Instead, you may want to get something like:

Gigabit Switch: http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-SG1008D-1000Mbps-Switching-Capacity/dp/B001EVGIYG/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1432050554&sr=1-2&keywords=gigabit+switch

Access Point: http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-WA801ND-Wireless-300Mbps-Repeater/dp/B004UBU8IE/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1432050606&sr=1-1&keywords=Wireless+Access+Point

A larger 9 port switch + just connecting a plain Access point.

Check your facts.

Get an 8 port switch, best bang for the buck is TP-Link. And then just get an access point like this TP-Link one. It's 300mbps, has a good range and this whole purchase is less than $60 USD.

>"Check your facts."

He asked for gigabit not peasant 300mb/s

As he said he's using it for virtual machines, downloading AND filesharing. A mere 300mb/s would be the biggest bottleneck for this.

I'd like to know one thing I've said that's wrong.

1) He is running a GIGABIT connection over the switch to his PC with the VMs.

2) OP did not specify WiFi to be a mission critical, only LAN.

3) Five port gigabit switches can be found for less than $30.

4) Making an assumption that a 300Mbps access point will be a bottleneck is quite bold.

5) You offered him a $150 USD router (that's on sale), for that money you can get a 8-Port Gigabit Switch and a 2.4/5Ghz Access Point with 1.1Gbps throughput, for something less than your quoted item.

1. He does not specify this, unless you've had prior contact.

2. "I'm looking to get a 5 port gigabit switch  switch for my bedroom. I want something that does wireless too" - directly from his post.

3. He didn't ask for a 5 port gigabit switch, but a 5 port gigabit switch WITH Wi-Fi, which I told him he'd better be off with a router for easier use

4. 300Mbp/s IS a bottleneck for local file transfer in my opinion, and pairing that with the downloading and on top of that Virtual Machines he said he's running (possibly with things like SSH and VNC) then it wouldn't leave much room.

5. He didn't specify the economics of the situation, so I didn't think it'd make a difference. and I also justified this in my original post.

I don't know how you got all of this from 1 simple thing I originally said, which is you want clarification was:

Get a wireless router like this one: (Redacted)5 port gigabit ones can be expensive

Everything else was me asking about his setup, which he hasn't replied to.

Look point is a router is not of much use here because even if you disable the routing you are not using a big number of features you paid a lot for. Needing a 5 port gigabit switch and something that can do wireless doesn't mean he needs a gigabit wireless connection.

And I was referring to your 5 port thing. A gigabit switch is really cheap, and a gigabit router can be found for 15 dollars more.

Okay that makes sense I guess.

It's not really what he asked for but I see where you're coming from.

The method you're suggesting would come in handy if set-up right, but the method I was suggesting would work perfectly out of the box.

It would work for general usages, but servers and other things it's not as good, because it will Double NAT and that is a terrible thing.
