4690K w/ Dark Rock Pro 3 without fans?

cheeze_tartz

So i'm planning on doing a silent build in a Fractal Design Define S (no window). Would a Dark Rock 3 without fans be able to cool a 4690K? I'm going to have 3 Noctua NF-A14's in the front.

if you have something rear or up top maybe, but in the front, still maybe.

I'd test it out, it won't overheat instantly, but it will after a bit.

look at the no-fen coolers they are barely able to cool a 90w tdp system now the dark rock has a much smaller heatsink so no maybe if you have other fans

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

Maybe get a noctua air cooler? It will also leave room for, over clocking :)

Without overclocking (obviously) and maybe a tiny bit of undervolting that should be possible. I know that I ran my i5 4670k on an NHD-14 without fans for a while, not under 100% load for several hours though. Try to mess with the airflow a bit, maybe using the rear fan as intake and just letting everything find its way out of the case through positive air pressure or something like that.

Even if it could, you'd be wasting your money. As mentioned above passive cooling won't be able to keep up with an overclocked 4690k, you're better off saving your $ and buying a cheaper locked i5 like an i5 4460.

Stock speeds, sure why not. A Hyper 212 Plus without a fan can cool my Phenom II X6 perfectly fine in an NZXT Phantom. But why would you want to do this is a better question, cause the DRP3 fan is already really quiet, you can just set a low fan curve.

hmm, sounds like a bad idea. I think i'm better off with an NH-D15. What do you guys think?

I don't think changing the cooler will make it much better unless you add a fan closer to the cooler. (Unless it is on rear or top, like I said)

The D-15 is a great cooler. I have one. Like the reviews say, it's the quietest cooler in its category.

It throttles at idle due to speedstep.

Lots of airflow.

Better answer. Still wondering how you have speed step enabled with that overclock.

offset voltage

I used to run it sometimes without fans, but I learned that if I disable ALL cstates and speedstep, I can achieve 4.9 at a lower voltage (1.275v) but my idle is hotter but my load temps have dropped

  • 3 weeks later...

Hello everyone.

Looking for total silence for my pc build I had the same thought - to use Dark Rock Pro 3 without fans on it.

I am planning my build as soon as 95W Skylake is out.

No overclocking intended. Since I'm not a gamer, might even consider slight CPU underclocking, but leaving iGPU as is, if that helps considerably.

And major question, is it possible to use fans from Dark Rock Pro 3 as case intake/exhaust fans?

Thanks.

I have the same set up as you (r4 case though). The dark rock pro 3 is brilliant at cooling the 4690k - even overclocked. It managed to cool an overclocked 4670k @ 4.4ghz efficiently, and depending on your chip, 4690k is very likely to run even cooler.

I'm confused why others are saying it won't work, I've had no problems.

Can't read, without fans you may run into some problems, but the fans on the drp 3 really aren't loud so I don't know why you'd remove them even for silence.
