So I recently bought a Gigabyte GTX 970 Windforce Edition (Not the G1 gaming) and the firs thing i noticed when i booted into a game, was that it has very bad coil whine, like SUPER loud.

Anyway, i took it back to the store i got it from and i replaced it for a ASUS 970 STRIX edition.

Got home, threw it into my PC, and what happens when i start up a 3D application? Coil Whine, again.

At this point i was pretty pissed off that i had 2 cards in a row that had coil whine. (also just to mention, that the Whine is DEFINITELY coming from the GPU)

So my first though was to take it back again, but then i thought, what if it isn't my GPU?

So I took the 970 out and threw in my old ASUS 660Ti, and what happened? Coil whine, but a minimal amount compared to both 970's.

So I did a bit of research and though that my power supply (Corsair RM750 80+ Gold) was causing the issue.

I hadn't noticed the whine previously when  I had my 660Ti in my system until now.

So what are my options? what are your recommendations?

Should I buy a new power supply? not from Corsair as i have had trouble with their power supplies before.

First, 970s are notorious for coil whine. Second, it very well could be your power supply.

this isnt a problem with the PSU, and it isnt a proglem with the GPU

it is the problem of the PSU+GPU combination that you have

obviously replacing the card did not work for you, so try replacing the PSU

not all 970s will coil whine with an RM PSU, and not all RM PSUs will make a GPU coil whine

its a case-by-case basis which makes it really difficult to find any pattern

the best you can do is replace parts until you find a combo that doens't whine

just because a PC components doesn't use japanese capacitors doesn't make it bad

there are bad caps from japan and good caps from china too

saying its bad because the caps are from china is just stereotyping the manufacturing location

OK, thanks for all of the help, ill try and find a suitable PSU that will replace my rm750.

Damn, from a Windforce to a Strix. bad decision. :/

I personally have liked ASUS's graphics cards better, i don't really care what people say, but to me, I would rather an ASUS card to a Gigabyte card.

Before i had my RM750 aswell, i had an HX750 which Coil Whined like a pig with my 660Ti, so i think the whole combo thing might be the answer.

Just a quick update:

I have been stressing my GPU on CS:GO (for the high frame rate) and MGS:V (For the ultra graphics) and it seems to have quietened down a bit, it is a lot less noticeable and also having a sound silencing case helps too.

Evertime a thread starts about gpu coil whine, there seems to be a corsair psu involved. I'm not suggesting anything, but it's quite the pattern.

Ok, thanks for the heads up, I will invest in a Cooler Master or EVGA PSU next time.

definitely EVGA. I've had issues with cooler master PSU's, but one experience probably doesn't count for anything.

Interestingly enough, I've actually replaced the gpu and the psu. I had coil whine with both 970s and both psus. The first one being a Corsair HX 750 and the other is a EVGA 750w G2. The second gpu was less noticeable but still there. At this point I've given up on the 970 since I don't want to waste any more gas money driving to the RMA centre.
