I'd go with the 2GB version, you'll probably run into issues with the gpu not being able to handle it at much more than 2GB :/

Though if you plan to SLI in the future then the 4GB version could be a decent idea.

Looking to upgrade from my 650 ti the poor thing is starting to die looking at the 960. Is the 4GB version substantially better or is not really worth the extra 30 pounds?

no

if you can drop 30 extra pounds on a GPU get that R9 290 that's on sale for like $240 USD or a 280x

VRAM helps the PC render higher resolutions. 2GB is very go with the 4GB. It also helps with Anti Aliasing. (x2,x4,x8). Anti Aliasing renders the game at higher resolution like 4K and downsizes it to fit your 1080p monitor to improve the image.

Yeah sounds good to me. Which one would you recommend im thinking EVGA FTW 970 is that a good choice?

If that is a good price then it should be fine. The gigabyte one is said to be one of the best cards for overclocking, but it really depends on the prices where you live.

As an owner of the 2gb 960 I have not encountered any issues. While I am very much an nvidia fan over amd I would have gotten an AMD if I had the wattage for it (first time builders errors). Especially if you are willing to spend the extra and the prices are right go for the 280x, the preformance boost will be great for 1080p and I know I woulda liked the extra one gb.

If you just wanna know if it's worth the extra money I haven't encountered any game where my 2gb wasn't enough at 1080

No, the 2gb version works fine. You will most likely never hit over that amount of ram usage. Don't go with AMD right now. AMD's cards have been expensive lately and right now Nvidia gives you better price per performance than the competing 280x. Keep in mind I said right now - in the future AMD cards might go down in price but if I were you grab the 960 2GB.
