GTX 970 vs Radeon R290

Is the amd worth considering in a budget orientated build? I'd prefer a GTX but if the Radeon is more cost efficient I would definitely consider it. Intended pc use is mainly gaming, cad and programming, light photo/video editing

Thanks

The GTX 970 is a faster card, has better power consumption and will likely run cooler under load depending on what version you choose, but the R9 290 is a lot cheaper and performs almost as well anyways. If you can take advantage of CUDA acceleration, possibly consider the GTX 970. If you cannot, and the extra money could be well spent on improving a part of your system that may need improving (such as the PSU), I'd get the R9 290.

If it is between the 970 or the 290, I'd shoot for the 290 on a budget, and the 970 for performance. If this were between the 970 and the 290x, however, I'd shoot for the 290x all day long. Cheaper and faster.

Hmm, well, 970 trades blows with 290x, and 290 is slightly (i think ~10%) slower than 290x. But, 290 should be considerably cheaper, especially for a budget build.

I'd go with 290 (if the difference is big enough). If the difference in negligible, then 970 :D

If you in Aus you should go buy the R290, but GTX970 are better at 1080p but when at 1440p and 4k r290 catches up.

Honestly if the debate is over the 290x vs the 970, the fps each card gets trades back and forth, but with the 290x you have 0.5GB more usable ram. But you can get gta 5 and the witcher 3 if you order a qualifying 970.

When i convert this difference into my country's currency, the difference between 290x and 970 does make a difference (it's quite some money compared to our standard) and i would get 290x (but that's only because i could invest those ~40$ into better CPU/Mobo), but if you don't care, then 970.

In Aus the 290x is $50 cheaper. (looking at the cheapest versions of each card at MSY).  It's also the card I would be looking at if you are on a budget and things like physx, Gsync and shadowplay are not important.

I seriously doubt that as an end user you will really see the difference between the two cards, especially at 1080.

bare in mind that the 970 is a mean overclocker and can reach 980 speeds easily. the 290x can too, but I believe only the MSI lightning cards can compete with the 970

I had a look at the 290x and it is cheaper and offers similar performance but it runs at nearly 100W more tdp, so I'd need to consider a bigger PSU and better cooling

You have to make allowance regardless of what GPU you get, I can't see you have to spend more on PSU simply because you have a 290x as most PSU are well above the requirement anyway.

With regard to heat, well,  as much as people don't like hearing it, the general consensus is that 290x does produce more heat and you will need to consider that when looking at cases.  But don't be fooled into thinking you need AIO's or custom loops or crazy shit like that, generally you just need slightly better airflow/space around the card.  Don't try and squeeze it into a mITX case.

It's funny when people use arguments like shadowplay to promote NVIDIA GPUs, but don't mention AMD features... get whatever is cheaper. They are pretty much equal in performance (it depends on the game, but generally we can say, that the GTX 970 is around 5-10% faster at 1080p.)

No one used shadowplay ( or any nvidia specific features for that matter) to promote nvidia in this thread.  what are you talking about?
