ATX/Micro ATX Case Restrictions - Why?

JMaio

Is it possible to stick an ATX motherboard e.g. ASUS Z87-DELUXE in what is called a "Micro-ATX" case such as the Corsair 350D?

Would it be possible? If not, why? Would it simply not fit, does it not have the necessary standoffs?

Thanks for reading,

The case is physically too small and there are not enough expansion slots. Also, the necessary standoffs are not there.

Edit - words.

An ATX motherboard has 7 expansion slots (12" tall) and a MicroATX case only accomodates boards with up to 4 expansion slots (9.6" tall).  The extra height on an ATX board would extend over 2" into the power supply area, or through the bottom of the case if the power supply is mounted at the top.

You could but it would not be properly screwed in and there would be no space for the power supply. And not enough expansions slots of course

I'm working on cutting down my Bitfenix Shinobi as much as I can while still fitting an ATX mobo in it. At the moment it looks like the overall size will be about 15% smaller than a 350D. The problem with ATX cases is the positioning of the PSU and optical drive bays, they pretty much determine how big the case is.
