Intel or AMD: HELP!

Go to solution Solved by Guest,

Right now, Intel. That said, you won't benefit from an i7 over an i5 in gaming. An i7 will only really help for tasks like rendering which can use more than 4 threads.

Yep. I have 12 that help very well with AE and PS.

Hey guys!

I posted earlier in the 'New Builds and Planning' section because I'm wanting to build a new PC. I've been back and forth for the past hour about going with an AMD build or Intel build that my boyfriend and I have put together. I would personally go for the Intel build because I want to upgrade in the future to an i7, and I just like the Intel side of things. At the same point, I am a cheapskate, and I like to pinch my pennies. The AMD build is significantly cheaper, and I'm about to get more for my money that way. I was wondering what you guys think I should go with. My budget was originally under $700, but I've had to tweak it slightly. I'm using the PC for mainly gaming and simple internet browsing. I already have a PSU and GPU, so that is why it is not added into the build. I also needed a WiFi adapter, monitor, an operating system, speakers and keyboard (no mouse).

AMD build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/7xLNFT

Intel build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/dDbYzy

Let me know what you guys think~

Thanks!

Depends on what you're going to be playing. If you are playing games like ARMA  you will want to get an Intel processor. Plus it has the benefit of a low TDP and a wide variety of significant upgrade paths, definitely worth it if you want to stick with Intel for a long time. AMD will be great if you want to multitask and run games at the same time at a reasonable cost. However, you're sacrificing single core performance and being on an old and dead chip socket, and will most defintely need to overclock your processor to keep up with your GPU if it is higher end.

tldr; Intel will be a perfect for what you need, FX 6300 is good for now but will have quite a few immediate drawbacks.

I've built 3 PC's, but none for myself... In fact, I'm using an iMac that my dad bought for me as my desktop. Awkward...

Please don't say "SSD drive." By doing so, you are literally saying "Solid State Drive Drive" and causing my brain cells to commit suicide. The same applies to HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express).

I'm an AMD Fanboy, but even I have to admit that the Intel route will give you more upgradability and better performance.

I'm a fucking AMD kawaii weeaboo desu I have seen the light

As an AMD fanboy, they have limited applications where they excel, and even then, it isn't by much. Go Intel.

What makes you think AMD is cheaper?

Well, I don't really think AMD is cheaper. I know AMD is cheaper. AMD is known for having 'budget' processors and other PC parts. While they may not be as powerful with a core to core comparison with Intel, AMD processors are fairly cheaper. Take this for example:

AMD FX-8350 for $165.93: http://www.amazon.com/AMD-FD8350FRHKBOX-FX-8350-8-Core-Processor/dp/B009O7YUF6/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1430008756&sr=1-1&keywords=amd+fx+8350

Intel i5-4690 for $224.99: http://www.amazon.com/Intel-i5-4690-Processor-Cache-BX80646I54690/dp/B00JST2QEW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1430008786&sr=8-1&keywords=i5+4690

If you look at the AMD processor linked, you will see that it is an 8-core processor. If you look at the Intel processor linked, it is a quad-core processor. Even though the AMD processor has more cores than the Intel processor, it is still almost $60 cheaper than the Intel processor. This is why so many people ask an upcoming PC builder what their budget is because it depends on what price range they can go for. So just by looking at this simple example (there are many different types of processors and price differences and variables), it can be seen that AMD processors are known for their cheap prices.

It's unfortunate.. but AMD isn't really worth it CPU wise right now.. Unless you're on a very strict budget. Go Intel.

this video of Nicolas11x12 comparing the Intel i5-4690K with the AMD FX-9590 and FX-8350

or this video with linus but its not the same i5 CPU but still mite help with making up your mind..

p.s. I personally always use AMD

I'd say Intel, they have better single core performance CPUs. Games like stronger cores over more cores.
