For a budget gaming/HTPC build, should I go G3258 wtih cooling and OC or an FX 6300?

It makes very little difference, a G3258 should give better performance across the board, unless playing Far Cry 4 is important to you. A G3258 can also be overclocked to give considerable performance gains.

Well, with an i7, GTX 1080, Full tower and flashy lights, it can obviously only be for one thing:

Something along the lines of a 750 Ti probably a 750 Ti or a 260X

Then go for whatever is cheaper. With those GPU's they'll perform about the same. The G3258 can run quiet and cooler though.

Pentium will be a boon for HTPC things where being cooler will let the fan stay quieter. That said if the games you want too play require 4 threads you will be boned.

System CPU : Ryzen 9 5950 doing whatever PBO lets it. Motherboard : Asus B550 Wifi II RAM 80GB 3600 CL 18 2x 32GB 2x 8GB GPUs Vega 56 & Tesla M40 Corsair 4000D Storage: many and varied small (512GB-1TB) SSD + 5TB WD Green PSU 1000W EVGA GOLD

Yeah I'd strongly recommend i3. It will play basically every game in existence stutter free.

The Pentium G3258 will usually have higher avg framerates than an FX-6300 but will run into serious stuttering issues because 2 threads just isn't enough. An i3 will outperform an FX-6300 in the overwhelming majority of games and eliminates the stuttering that you'd have with a G3258.

If it has to be either the G3258 or FX-6300 then it's a tough call... the FX-6300 will have more consistent results, but the G3258 (while a bit of a gamble) gives you an excellent upgrade path so you can upgrade to i3/i5/i7 later.

Intel i5-4690K @ 3.8GHz || Gigabyte Z97X-SLI || 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws X 1600MHz || Asus GTX 760 2GB @ 1150 / 6400 || 128GB A-Data SX900 + 1TB Toshiba 7200RPM || Corsair RM650 || Fractal 3500W
