Windows 10?

iwanthaloandpie

So im planning on installing the insider version of windows 10, but i have a couple questions,

-Does it erase all my present data?(games, music, pictures)

-Does it overwrite the W8.1 data?

Those are my main concerns on it.

System specs

Gygabyte z97 gaming 5

Intel core i5 4690

WD caviar blue 1tb

Hyper xfury 8Gb

I wouldn't recommend using W10 Technical Preview as a main OS. I've had several system breakages after installing updates, system restore wasn't helping me, so I had to restore HDD image backup. Glad it was installed in a virtual machine.

i would suggest installing it in a virtual machine like Oracle VM Virtual Box where you can make sure that no data from your hardrive goes

here is the link to Virtual Box https://www.virtualbox.org/

Just wait for actual release (in few months).

Otherwise unexperienced person like u can do something wrong and regret replacing his working OS.

Just make a second small partition on your main drive and boot the preview from a usb drive

This or get a second drive... Win 10 is stable enough that you certainly don't need to be any kind of expert; I'm using it as my main OS, although what data I have I don't really care if I lose.

CPU: i5 4690K  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100   Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97X UD3H   Memory: G.Skill (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866   Storage: Samsung 830 Series 128GB 2.5" SSD/Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM   GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 660 Ti SC 2GB   Case: Cooler Master CM 690 II (Black) ATX Mid Tower   PSU: CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX650M 650W 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified   Optical Drive: MSI DH-24AAS-17 R DVD/CD Writer   Operating System: Windows 10 Pro (64 bit)

If you just want to try Windows 10 out: run it in a virtual machine. If you want to try to actually use it: make a separate partition for it and dual boot it as people have said.

Either way, don't expect the data on it to be permanent; be prepared to lose anything and everything on that partition. It's still an unstable developmental build.

Windows 10 is not stable enough to run as a daily driver. Microsoft is up and down like a roller coaster with issues and bugs with every other build. Wait until after /BUILD/ as they should start getting more stable.
