for instance, the Galaxy S6, with it's all glass back. If it, say, had a DBrand skin on it, does that provide any shock absorption? I can Imagine it being more durable than just a naked phone but I'm wondering if it would actually protect the glass from cracking if dropped from say pocket height. Has anyone tested this?

No because people don't willfully drop their phones.  All kidding aside though, It may actually help.

I doubt it would do much to protect the phone dropwise, but scratch wise it may help quite a bit.

Not really it's just a vinyl sticker, I made some vinyl for my iPhone 6 personally but it offers no protection just better grip on the back and sides. Even something like a regular screen protector will do very little if you impact the side of the glass, the best is to use a case if your worried. Front something like direct impact on the glass a glass screen protector may give it a bit more durability but if it's a really heavy blow then not much will save it.

It'll help prevent scratches, but against impacts? Very minimal.

not a lot against impact

but if it gets scratches you just need to replace the skin not the phone
