So, I'm planning a list of upgrades for my computer, and I came to the CPU cooler. Getting a watercooled AIO is too mainstream, and I don't wanna do a custom loop. What's a really cool looking, well functioning, NOT mainstream air cooler?

Just a guy who peaked at building back in the days of the GTX 980. If you see me here, assume i have technical knowledge akin to a committed hobbyist builder back then. If something's changed, you'll need to tell me(nicely plz). I'm probably asking for help with the modern build scene since I have no clue what's going on.

Get a Peltier cooling unit for your hipster needs http://www.frozencpu.com/products/2408/exp-01/245W_Potted_Peltier.html

It's basically a heat exchanging plate, that with enough provided power (usually you get a dedicated PSU for it) it transfers all heat from one side to the other. You get near zero (or below in many cases) temperatures on the cold side, but burning hot temps in the opposite. Then you have to find a way to cool the hot side (people usually goes water for it).

What case will you be using? Do you have a set budget for the cooler?

edit: just saw you have a H97 board... I  wouldn't spend much on an aftermarket cooler considering that the CPU you use will be locked and a high performance air cooler won't be needed.

No water cooling

Who told you about water cooling; Peltiers are on the exotic side of things and do have quite impressive temps (if the correct one is picked for the task, and handled properly). However you will need a way to cool that freaking hot plate. Most people straps tower coolers or CPU blocks to them.

I did :P

It was the FrozenCPU link (here it goes again  http://www.frozencpu.com/products/2408/exp-01/245W_Potted_Peltier.html ). This is not from the super low end peltiers, but it's not big one either, there are certainly better units out there, but they will result in a sub zero situation most likely, where condensation can become an issue).

A couple pics of possible setups with Peltiers (also called TEC):

With a tower heatsink on the hot side:

Keeping it cool with a regular waterblock

maxresdefault.jpg

Corsair was a hipster too back in the day, they even had this RIDICULOUS thermoelectric cooled memory!, Then, you could buy these kits that even had a waterblock on top of the peltier unit for cooling the hot side, while keeping the memory literally chilling:

I can just imagine something like a lava lamp moving heat away from the CPU; but I don't think something similar exists hahaha!

Is there a cooler modding competition? Someone should do that.

Cooler master TPC 612

TPC 812

Oh god yes, those two are truly awesome. Be aware that the stock bracket can only be used in certain orientations on certain sockets though!

1. Overclock until the magic smoke comes out. 2. Modify until broken. 3. Fix and repeat.
